donor track is 7 inches wider (perfect for flares) the donor base is 9 inches longer (perfect if you have a saws-all and a welder and a good drive shaft guy)

Through process of elimination, I believe that the answer to the riddle is right there (no one has yet even guessed the Make!)

OMG... Are you really going to stuff an EVO under there?!

Process of elimination says that or a WRX.

I haven't checked wheel bases etc so I don't know how close they are. But I'm pretty sure it is going to be AWD.

It will have a longitudinal engine. NOHOME linked a picture of a Mitsubishi. I counted that. It is not a Mitsubishi but you are so close now it is just... The suspense!

Yes the most cursed of all. Not a singe viable example exists that I could find.

Crackers get's a cracker!!!!!!!!!!

A 05 WRX to be converted to RWD and have the engine moved back to the firewall. That is the new crazy build challenge.

BOO! I was all on board until you said "RWD".

Well trying to keep the AWD with the Subaru platform is going "Full Special". The engine would be sticking out the front of the car, that would be BOO.

says the guy who is standing out the window of his wheel-standing corvair!

OK, did not see the Subaru coming for just that reason; chassis swap + Driveline swap = more work and expense than I would do again. Had I chosen to leave the Miata drivetrain in place, Mrs NOHOME would be driving the car by now, and I would have an extra 10k in the beer kitty. I doubt she would have cared. I dare say had I kept the Miata drivetrain it would have been a better car when done. Not as good a hot-rod, but a better car.

You are doing a radical engine swap (you don't mention what engine) A chassis swap and big fender flares; that is a E36 M3load of work. Looking forward to this.

I originally bought the WRX as a donor for my 5 speed Legacy GT Wagon. It was to have everything that I needed to put turbo into the Legacy. However My GT Wagon is very nice and clean and drives perfect and the Z is just sitting there waiting to be loved. So i though... why not at least see if i could use the chassis, sub frame and drive train, engine, also the suspension and brakes, steering, body wiring etc... Basically everything I possibly could to revive my little Z car.

I think my approach will be to chop down the WRX until I just have the sub frame with the floor, wheel wells and strut towers. Then I will shorten the wheel base to match the Z, basically just cut a section of the rear floor out and weld back together. This will give me a sort of rolling chassis to measure and play with.

Now I will try to install the engine and trans but not in the normal Subaru location. I will attempt to get the front of the engine inline with the center of the front wheels. Since the Subaru engine is so short it will end up being mid engine (100% of the drive train and engine behind the front wheels.)

So all this experimentation can happen with out even touching the Z. Then if it looks like everything is in order then i can decide whether or not to chop the floor out of the Z.

Edit:

I will likely start a new thread from this point. "Subaru Powered Datsun 240Z" Subaru Powered 240Z Thread
