So after selling my cars... I find that I need a car and due to my continued nervousness about my employment, I'm looking for a $6000 ish beater.. This thread will help document the search and fix up.
Requirements -
can't look like a total pile of garbage
can't be super rotted (Minnesota).
Would like 4x4 and some ability to tow (camper or small boat.. nothing big)
Needs to fit three kids and hold mountain bikes...
I really wanted a CPO F150, but just don't feel like outlaying the cash right now.
First up a 2002 Seqouia.. Asking is $3700 with 200k miles but supposedly tons of maint done in the past year..
100 series Land Cruiser, gonna have some miles on it for $6k but plenty of room inside, can tow, and easy to work on if needed

I'm guessing a fly & drive is out due to Covid concerns?
In reply to Pete Gossett (Forum Supporter) :
I could. Depends in the deal. But I doubt my wife would like me doing that.
And to your search...
Gen3 Mitsubishi Montero 01-06 (not Montero sport)
Suzuki XL-7 '99-'06
Well. That was fast. 5 minutes to look at the sequoia. Fist sized rust hole just forward of the drivers door.
that's a hard pass too bad she had a mountain of dealership receipts
on to the next one.
In reply to Fueled by Caffeine :
2004 Sequoia with 139k for $5900obo It appears to be about 2-3 miles from the Nola airport, so you couldn't get much more convenient for a fly-n-drive.
Here’s an 05 Sequoia for $3500 though it has 234k on it the ad says it runs like a new car. It's close to the Mobile airport too.
Wife just crushed the fly and drive.
civic si sedan has entered the chat
well also g35x
ok, this is going to be off the wall.... but 2007-2008 Sorento. Last of the body on frame, 2-spd transfer case but had the 3.8 Lambda wuth 263hp

If Fly& Drive is out, how about Drive & Drive with a one-way rental car?
3.5 hrs south in Des Moines '06 Montero w/ 180k asking $3.3k though the window price was once $4.4k

I bought one 2 years ago off CL and had it shipped from Arkansas to MD. Under $6k bought me a super clean, low-miles, 1999 k2500 that's been a great family mobile. Shipping was about $800.
This might have potential:

Tons of maintenance done? What's left? Is it time for the body to rot? Seats/ interior go?
There is no free lunch. It's rare when fantastic deals come ready to go.
With used cars you have to budget maintenance costs along with purchase price. Plus older cars cost more to insure because they don't have the built in safety features some newer cars do.

Super Rad.
One thing to watch for on these trucks is the transmission- the 4L60E isn't remarkably robust. That said, if they're never used to tow or haul anything substantial and they have a decent cooler on them, they can be OK. Luckily, having a transmission overhauled on one of these isn't terribly expensive; at a 3k buy-in even budgeting for a trans overhaul you'll still be under $6k. At the very least, I'd change the fluid and filter and install a cooler if it doesn't have one.

I like those waaaaaaay more than I should. A coworker here had one. They beat the hell out of it and I still liked it, rear brakes screaching and front rotors shaking and all.

At some point the 5.3 got cylinder deactivation which caused all sorts of trouble. I've had a number of the GMT-400 generation trucks and have a favorable opinion of that generation's engineering and build quality. The later models...not so much.
In reply to volvoclearinghouse (Forum Supporter) :
That would be the GMT-900 and newer (07-up), The GMT800 still had the LS truck engine without that.
