Im back. And in addition to the splitfure making its 2nd annual debut this year, it will be accompanied by what i consider to be, a very heavy hitter.
I made a public post on facebook looking for an altima to race in the ole altima 600 hosted by cleetus down in bradenton. I was expecting to get shared post or maybe individuals that wanted to rid their lives of a sad pathetic ragged out altima i would get cheap to go down and destroy. However, what i got instead, was below....
A 2006 Altima SE-R that has spent the better part of 5 years parked on a lift in the back of a garage that had not seen a racetrack in probably 6+ years. It had been torn down to make multiple upgrades but i was told the classic line "ran when parked." So naturally i pleaded my case and that id like to race it for the atlima race but also the grm race if i could get it for the 2k limit, and they agreed.
A week later i showed up and loaded the roller, and about a million parts into the bed of my truck. Currently sorting and sifting through hundreds of bolts trying to find a home and inspecting major components in hopes that ill get it together and it will in fact run. It is a stock drivetrain car but did have new tires (probably flat spotted by now) with wilwood front brakes and a cold air intake. The primary benefits of the car is that it was caged, and very thoroughly gutted. And its in great shape since it was revamped and hasnt seen action since. Never had time to get tore up.
For the TLDR guys, crazy GRM challenger buys someones abandoned project with hopes to win an event he never has.
On the bright side, you can't drive around with the rear bumper halfway hanging off if you don't even have a rear bumper...so this is already the highest-class altima i've ever seen
Altimas should come caged from the factory, and I am very much following your journey. Loved the splitfire idea, hope this one is as good :)

Ironically you can tell there was previously Big altima energy because at some point it was hit in that right rear bumper area lol. She will look full classy for the challenge and have all bumpers installed. For how long though? Who knows. Altima energy prevails.
If you want to do it correctly you'll need to run the event with at least two spare tires, at least one of which must be on a drive wheel.

Yeah, Nissan had them in the press fleet, so we drove them back in the day.

The QR25 had plenty of potential too. The one in my Sentra Spec V Turbo put 270 hp to the wheels.

Yea, im hoping for the best on that one. You can see the deteriorated stickers still on them. Lol
Just watched that Altima 600 episode and thought of you. Probably a good thing you weren't ready in time...you might not have a Challenge car afterwards! Practically a destruction derby.

Yeaaaaa, I made the conscious decision to not go in fear it would get destroyed. after watching the race, i felt good about that decision. Plus with him annoucning they will allow 100 cars next race, this car will NEVER go to that race under my ownership lol
After watching the video he posted about the Altima 600 I would say its was a good call to not go. That race looked like complete chaos.
Largest milestone achieved! After meticulously going through bins, buckets, and bags of bolts, i finally got all the hardware sorted and figured out where 90% of it goes. So then it was time to put jt together and install it.
A few hours later and shes in the car! Most of the harness is hooked up too! Just need to install the axles and hook up the amenities like power steering etc. Then it will be time to check all the fluids, bleed the clutch, cooling system and pray she runs!
Bunch of little stuff done tonight. Master cylinder replaced. It was bad. Fortunately a new one came with the car. I thought they just were going to do it for the heck of it. But now i know lol. Clutch is now bled. Power steering hooked up. Shift cables hooked up. Headlights installed. All the rest of the harness is hooked up. Oil changed. Coolant hoses installed. Fans installed.
Going to change the trans fluid tomorrow, hook up the intake and install the axles and try to fire her up.
In the process of hooking up the harness i noticed this old sticker on the ecu. From NISFormance. Apparently its been reflashed. Says 93 octane only yada yada. Hopefully good for some extra ponies. Did a quick search and some of their M6 tuned videos show 290whp with bolt ons and a tune. If thats the case, this thing will be WAY more fun than i anticipated lol
What a ripper! I remember when these came out, being so surprised that they stuffed the VQ under the hood of a family car.
Even my '06 SE-R Spec V that I had in college was a riot with the 6 speed.
Well tonight was a series of ups and downs. Fired the car up and to no surprise it sounded like a mid 2000s subaru because of its misfires. Began by ubplugging coils to see which cylinders were firing and then moved the coils to see if the problem followed. Since the problem remained at the same cylinder, we knew it was fuel related. Also not surprising (the car has sat for about 5 years). We pulled the injectors which requires pulling the upper manifold and BOOM, first surprise, the manifold is ported. Pretty cool to find.
Then we proceeded to pull all of the injectors and "clean"with brake clean and reinstall. Since before pulling we got the front 3 to work, we moved those to the rear and moved the rear up front.
We also went to oriellys and bought some b12 fuel system cleaner and grabbed some fresh 93 fuel.
Got everything back together and immediately ran like normal, BUT, a timing chain rattle. Or so we thought...so some of the parts the car came with included a new timing chain kit and water pump. I elected not to do this as i trusted it ran fine as told. I was starting to really regret that decision as we began listening to the noise. Welp, although i topped the power steering fluid off, it dropped to a level that the pump was unhappy with. Topped it back off and the noise went away. WooHoo!
So tonight we have a fully running altima! Still need to install the axles so we can drive it, but that will be this weekends goal!

These altimas were the fastest cars in champcar (right before the boxsters started dominating). One of the altimas won like 5 of 6 races it entered one year. That is insane for a champcar race.
They pushed the rules right to the limit doing everything to make more power (some were even caught cheating with stroker engines).
In other words, I'm not surprised that it's ported (legal for champcar). I also wouldn't be surprised if you find a lot more items that have been massaged.
I'm thinking you will be pleasantly surprised with the power that thing makes.
