Haha true. Between that and the open downpipe, it might actually turn a few heads lol

Happy to see this is moving along.  After the CQ is gone, my 80q will be moving into the garage for some rehab.  Been sitting for nearly 2 years now, just haven't had the time or space to work on it.

I'd really like to build a small chassis eventually. A 4kq is still at the top of the list, but the idea of an S2 clone is really growing on me.

Another little mini update. Heard about these single din CarPlay head units on Jason Cammisa's podcast a few weeks ago and picked one up. It's a Power Acoustik CP71w. $140 and has wireless CarPlay. Doesn't look completely out of place in here either. At least not any less out of place than the early 2000's pioneer that was in there before.

And yeah, ideally I'd have something more period correct in there, but the Blaupunkt SQR46 DAB is almost $500, and the Porsche Classic headunit is almost $1200. This will work for now lol

Report back on how the radio works out for you. I got one I found on Reddit for under $30 with wired Apple CarPlay and a physical volume knob. Audio quality on it is pretty much what you'd expect for the price so I might switch it out at some point. Only problem is like you said limited options on single din with CarPlay, and the ones I've seen are pretty expensive. Plus I wanted a physical volume knob.

I've been running one of those decks in my early E90 BMW for a few months now and I'm pretty happy with it. Sound is decent and overall it's pretty reliable. Every once and a while it will disconnect the wireless carplay and reset but I've had that happen on my wired pioneer and stock head units in rentals before too. The built in mic seems to work well in this car but it is pretty quiet (the car), not sure it would be great in a louder car and wish there was an option to add an external mic. The firmware update to get wireless android auto is also very easy to do. The display size is small compared to double din unit but I adjusted to it quickly, the only other thing I wish it had and hardware wise it should be able to do it is to automatically add a bit of volume with speed like you get in newer factory systems.

With wireless carplay it uses the the head units GPS so make sure you use the provided antenna for that, I was able to hot glue mine to the underside of a plastic trim piece in my dash so you can't actually see it but it still receives good signal.

I'm planning on grabbing another to put in my E28 as the Kenwood unit in there no longer reliably connects to my phone over bluetooth.

Pretty sure I've got the same $30 headunit on a shelf in my garage. I was originally gonna install it in this car until I found out about the power acoustik. It'll probably end up in my truck now. The cheap Kenwood I've got in there now is awful.

So far, not much to report on it. It sounds good, but I haven't gotten to mess with it too much. Once the exhaust is finished I can really start putting miles on it. Sounds good sitting in the driveway though!

Nice! Thanks for the feedback. Good to know, especially about the GPS antenna. Didn't realize what that was, and just stuffed it in the dash. The lack of the external mic is definitely strange. Pretty much every headunit I've bought in the last 15 years has included one and I was surprised when I found that this one didn't.

I might have to try to make a call from the car to test out the mic while it still has the open downpipe lol

Took a test drive last night. In true amateur fashion, I waited until dark on a 20 degree night, took no tools with me, and my phone only had 5% battery. Car was running great and boosted well, which up to this point, it hadn't been. Thinking I'd sorted out my boost leak issues completely, I rolled into boost in 4th gear after getting out of town and promptly blew the hose off the throttle body at 12psi.
I pulled over, found the hose off, but without a screwdriver, couldn't do anything. Limped the car home and parked it for the night. This morning after reattaching the hose and torque checking the others, I tried to start it. Wouldn't hold idle, so I pulled the plugs and found this. 5 fouled plugs in 15 miles. Nice.

At least it left & returned under it's own power. That's progress!

Maybe they're fouled because MAF was reporting lots of air & adding lots of fuel, but air was blowing out of disconnected hose.

Yep! Good point!

I'm hoping that's all it is. I've got a new set of plugs to install the next time I get a chance to mess with the car. I guess we'll see

Longest, most successful test drive yet! At least by some metrics. Made it into town to get a full tank of fresh gas. Got some dirty looks thanks to the open downpipe, but whatever. Took it out on a 20ish mile drive afterward to see how it felt, keeping the boost at 10psi or less, just because I was still a little nervous after the last adventure. The car feels great, honestly. Runs and idles smooth, and the brakes and suspension feel solid. I remembered why I fell in love with this platform. Lots of character. I can't wait to put more miles on this thing.

Anyway, I got it home, and went to do a quick walk around to admire the car and noticed a bunch of fluid dripping down from the front of the engine. Power steering fluid. Again. Looks like I'm pulling the pump for a 3rd time.

At this point, I'm a little defeated by this power steering pump. The O rings have been replaced, but I'm guessing I might have warped the x plugs when I tightened them on last time. The edges of the x had rounded, so I had to use a hammer and screwdriver to get them tight. Ill need to see if I can source new plugs, or maybe a different pump entirely as this one might be cursed. Or maybe it's time for Volvo EPAS lol

The EPAS swap/upgrade has worked well for some vehicles I've seen.

Just sayin'

Great build, glad to see it coming together. Back in the day I test drove a few Audi V8s (not Audis with a V8, the Audi V8) and loved the chassis and the power.

I was not as mechanically inclined then and I worried about reliability, but man I wanted to paint mine like this:

v8q's are awesome. I'd love to own one, but it'd probably be a little redundant. One of my friends used to work for a company that did vinyl graphic installs on emergency vehicles. He's since changed jobs, but while he was there, we kicked around doing a DTM livery (or something like the 5000 Talledega) on this car while he had access to all the tools and equipment.

I'm getting way too good at pulling this PS pump. Had it out in a few minutes. Looks to me like the leak was coming from the bottom plug (2nd pic). As you can see, the x plugs are all pretty hammered. Best practice is to use a modified drag link socket on these, but I've yet to have good luck with it. Ended up using a hammer and screwdriver, which was obviously a mistake.

I'm pretty fed up with this hydraulic system, but I'm giving it another shot. I found and bought a used pump on eBay. Allegedly, it's a ZF reman. If/when it fails, I'll get serious about Volvo EPAS

What thread are those plugs? Can you put something more conventional in there to get more torque on? I presume those are because they use the same body pump for multiple applications and have different inlets/outlets?

I'm not taking the ones out of my pump, as it's not leaking, but from what I understand, the plug should only seat an O-ring.

No clue on the thread pitch, and it'll have to be pretty short to deal with the lack of clearance, but there's gotta be something out there
