Skid plate sounds like a wise idea. HDPE might be a good material to use.
I voted. . .
days ago. .
on a mail in ballot. so today I cleaned, scrubbed, sanded and painted inside the engine bay. I want this thing to stay looking somewhat like a survivor but clean clean clean. the rust from the battery had to go.
here is the best "before" shot I could find. still after the initial cleaning but a decent example of how dirty it was.
yesterday I pulled the lower fire wall out along with the front floor board. got some cleaning done and am currently installing new heat insulation. should have that engine back in this evening.
honestly it was cleaner than I expected under the floor
Because I'm unfamiliar with tracked vehicles, maybe I'm asking a stupid question, but what am I looking at in the last picture. I see the transmission, and the axle/output shaft. But why does it have a hydraulic ram attached to it? does the entire engine and trans all pivot as a assembly when that ram is active? Edit- I see there is one on each side. Still not understanding their purpose. assuming steering?
In reply to TGMF:
your looking at what kristi called "ski action" it allows the driver to adjust the ride height on each side for traversing slopes. there are also 2 suspension springs per corner. think I might have a broken one
the axle tube pivots along with the gear reducers outside the body and the suspension beams but the engine and trans dont move
You know given that this is supposed to be used in cool weather, I wonder how a hydrostatic pump and motor set up would work compared to the mechanical transmission one...
Hummm
In reply to Flight Service:
that seems to be the standard on modern cats. the kristi could benifit from it I bet. maybe give it a higher top speed, probably weighs less. I imagine its way out of my price range also.
I know I could have more power for less money but I'm still glad I rebuilt. There is a certain piece of mind that comes with an engine you built yourself

spent yesterday in the parts washer cleaning cylinder tin. still need a few things like new plug wires. probably break it in early next week.
atleast its finally snowing in colorado
starting to look the part.
needs a carb gasket and some fluids before its ready to fire. also got the drive belt lacing in the mail today so I can finish splicing tracks.
broke in the engine tonight with a little help from my friend sam. everything went great. sounds awesome! reminds me of a trike with straight pipes. not as loud as I expected without mufflers.
my tach and oil pressure gauges arent working but I'll sort that out. just glad the engine ran so well. gotta get a video up soon.

a few updates, since the break-in and sitting full on oil over the holiday I can say there is no evidence of any oil leaks on the engine. very happy about that.
the solex carb is leaking fuel from the throttle plate shaft. Im blaming that on the stiff throttle linkage which will also need a special touch. may even go cable on that.
need to look into these old stewart warner tach amplifiers and see about getting that working. pretty sure it needs an oil pressure sender. would like to add a matching oil temp gauge.
95% sure its got a broken suspension spring on the heaviest corner. . . and its a wierd spring that could be hard to get
need to learn myself on the hydraulic system and fix any issues that may be lurking
find a widshield wiper arm that is short enough to work
gather up a spares box
install tracks and wait for snow
There are a couple local guys who build new leaves. I'm sure there must be one near you.
It was deep yesterday!
