My wife and I spent some time at the Tugboat Roundup talking with Mike Magnant, the owner - builder of this little tug. It's fiberglass over wood, powered by an outboard motor tucked in the back.
Yeah, the plans really do come from Berkeley Engineering....

One of these days I would love to build one. Either that or a steam launch.
I wanna build this
actually, the mini-tug in the OPs post reminded me of a bath toy, so why not... go large
I went up in one of these this weekend. Thinking this should be my next major project!
I fully endorse everything posted thus far!

hole in the water in to which money is thrown
sounds like my kind of hobby!
Hobbies are all holes for money. Be it water, sky, scrap metal...they're all holes for money to be thrown in.
Choose you poison.

A guy on the 914 board was invited to fly in a WWII Stearman.
If I really wanted a project ........

I grew up riding in cedar strip boats a lot like the one in your picture. Everyone you cross loves them, they do have some extra maintenance (like soaking the boards). Great boats tho, here mom and pop shop that stills makes them. It's a multi generation company, and they make very affordable boats

Scarano and Hacker are within 40 miles of me, Garwood is about 200 miles away, but you see them around. Someday, when the Prize Patrol finds my driveway ......

I've been doing some consulting work for a flight training school. My bill gets paid in trade for flight training.

I'd love to build one of the WWI kits from Aerodrome Aeroplanes....

...but that is beyond my budget. After the datsun replica is done, my next project will probably be scratch-building an acoustic guitar. (The eco-hippie tree-hugger in me says that I should try using locally removed melaleuca wood. It's an invasive pest, and is closely related to tea trees, so it should have some pretty grain.)

After I build a kayak or two, I'd love to build a barrel-back Chris Craft style boat. Especially given how close to water I live.
I've found DIY build plans for all sorts of boats over the years from row-boats to 40'+ cabin cruisers along with a few build blogs. One blog I vaguely remember was a ocean-going boat welded together from plate steel.

Nice stuff. A lot less expensive than I thought it would be too.

Biplane rides? That rocks! If I make it up that way I definitely will visit them.
I'd rather throw my money in a hole in the water than throw it up into the air, only to have it come crashing back to earth.

Same here... if a boat build goes bad, I can swim... If a plane build goes bad, I can't fly...

I grew up going to Gerber's cottages on Wolf Lake just down the road from Powassan. My brother even has a lot just to the west of Powassan that he is rebuilding a cabin on to eventually retire to. I love those boats, and am tempted every time that I visit to leave a small pile of cash, even though I don't have decent water locally to run one on. Still, thanks for bringing a smile to my face on a difficult Monday.
