Meet the Tribble.  A $600 nonfunctional 2nd generation Prius.

Forum member  90buickCentury listed it here a few weeks ago.  No pics in the ad, so I requested a few.  Here's what he sent a few days later:

We left early about 7:30am.

Aaron King was kind enough to meet up with us there and help load it up.

The ride back home was uneventful,  despite the high winds that kept me white knunckled the entire way.

How are the tires? In one picture they seem like they might be good.

In reply to John Welsh :

Good eye John.  They are  in good shape.

Received this from  seller:

"All 4 tires are new Michelins. Date code 47th week of 2021"

Oh, the club is bigger than that!

The smaller club is the Multiple Prius Owners Club.  Currently Indy-Brian is leading that club as I am down to just 2 Prius

All three for a combined cost of less than just one average priced used car!

Ironically, the one I sold is probably the one you paid the most for.

Ok, so why was this a $600 Prius?

  • Needs  exhaust work  = Catalytic  converter .
  • Dead 12 Volt battery
  • Problem with the hybrid battery system,  despite  90 BuickCentury replacing a few cells.
  • Interior is really dirty and desperately needs a DEEP cleaning
  • Exterior body  flaws: dented passenger doors, front bumper cover scrapes and bruises,  rear latch needs repaired
  • ~ 196,000 miles
  • Cracked windshield

True.

  1. Prius bought from you for $2,200 (currently has 246,272 miles
  2. Prius bought from C'list dude for $1,400 (currently has  266,824 miles)
  3. Prius (Tribble) for $600 (currently has 196,904 miles)

That's  710,000 miles  combined and total outlay of $4,200 for all three.

Let's see if I can "wake this thing up" or if Tribble is doomed to be parted out.

How many dollars did you invest into #1 & #2 to make them daily driver,  "road ready"?

#2 only took a tank of gas and a pair of windshield wipers, so ~ $40 ( I was able to nurse the 12 volt battery back to life after several rounds of deep cycle charging, and the rims have a slow leak, but I've just been hitting them every two weeks with some compressed air)

#1 took a bit more:

  • Catalytic converter eBay cheapo ($79)
  • labor to install converter ($200)
  • O2 sensor ($16)
  • wiper blades ($10)
  • loaded struts for front ( $84 each plus $16 shipping) = $184
  • four new cheapy tires @ $59 each plus mounting = $336

So $825 total to get # 1 up to daily duty

So, #1 was $2200 + 800 = $3000 but for that $3k you are on fresh tires and fresh struts.

#2 was $1400 + $40 but needs wheels, tires.  But, you just spend $600 on better wheels and tires so swap them over and you are $1440 + $600 = $2040.

This then zeros out the newest car.  It could be a parts car or a real runner starting from a price point of $0.

Great!

In that logic, you are now at a place where even if you drop $2-$3k to make this black car road worthy, you are still winning!

With a 12 Volt battery jumpered in the other night, I noticed the Driver's side headlight was aiming at the ground.

Looks like the headlight housing is shifted down.  Most likely one of the mounts is broken.  I'll have to check that out when I pull the front bumper cover to push out the dent.  You can see the gap around the housing in this pic below:

Let's take a closer look at the state of the interior:

That's going to need some attention, because I think this is going to become a driver, not just a parts car.  I'm going to spend as little $$ on this as possible.  Cheapo Cat ordered.
