A little over a year ago I had to make some large changes to my business, I was getting squeezed by insurance reimbursements, payroll, costs, etc.  That caused me to sell my Land Cruiser to put more of a cushion in the bank.  I bought a cheaper VW Touareg TDI as I couldn't find a Cayenne Diesel with the options I wanted.  Who knew it'd be basically impossible to find one with roof rails and a tow hitch?  A year later and happily the changes I've made have made a positive impact, I was missing some of the options I wanted for the Touareg and it decided it wanted some attention.  I sold it to a nice fellow, disclosing everything, even put it on my lift and went over it with his mechanic friend, so no surprises.

I narrowed my search to a 2015-2018 Cayenne Turbo, those have the same interior as our Cayenne Diesel, which while button heavy, I like.  I had a specific option group I was targeting, I wanted heated and cooled seats, heated steering wheel, Burmeister sound package, tow package and roof rails.  The Porsche sport exhaust, limited slip rear diff (PTV+) and active swaybar control (PDCC)  and active/radar cruise control were nice to haves, but not must haves.  I also wanted to stay away from the ceramic brakes (PCCB's) due to rotor replacement cost and the fact that you need to run 21" wheels to clear them.  You can clear the standard turbo brakes with 19" wheels, which would allow me to swap the snow wheels from the Touareg to the Cayenne Diesel, then put the snow wheels from the Cayenne Diesel onto the Cayenne Turbo I bought.

Well, the best laid plans, etc.  It's really hard to find a Porsche with the options you want, with the color combination you want.  I found one that checked almost all the boxes in Salt Lake, where a good friend and fellow Porsche owner lives.  He checked it out for me and while the interior was in great shape, the exterior had scrapes, dings, etc.  Despite being a CPO'd car, it rarely went to the dealer and didn't have a good service history, along with the transfer case not being replaced.  The transfer cases are a known problem on these, to the point where Porsche extended the warranty on them, so this one not being replaced was a red flag for me.  I decided to pass on it.

On Rennlist I found a 2016 Cayenne Turbo S, which mechanically is the same as the 2016 Cayenne Turbo, only difference is a software tune to make more power.  However, the Turbo S's have PDCC and PTV+ stock.  This one had all the options I wanted, including all the "nice to haves" that were on my list.  The only bummer is all Turbo S's have PCCB brakes.  This one had been dealer serviced its entire life and also has almost two years of CPO Porsche warranty left.  So really nothing to worry about mechanically.  I liked the color combo and it looked very clean.

It's in the LA area and I've got friends in So Cal, so Monday a good friend of mine checked it out.  He called me with the very enthusiastic thumbs up, saying it looked new and drove incredibly well.  So yesterday morning I wired over the money, which I have to say, weirded me out BIG TIME.  Huge leap of faith there, thankfully it seems to be working out.  Seller sent me the signed title and a set of keys, shipper is picking it up this afternoon and it should be here Friday.  I've made the appointment with the DMV to move the plates from the Touareg over.

Will need to get it VIN Verified and smog tested this weekend, I'll drop by the dealer and see if my friend/service advisor there will print out all the service records for me.  It was more than I wanted to spend, the Turbo S's have a significant cost delta compared to the "regular" Turbo's, apparently because Porsche only brought in 350 of them a year.  I'll get tax savings on it, and between the money from that, selling the Touraeg and a retention bonus from the Air Force, that'll pay for it.  In the end I thought it was worth it given it was so clean, was CPO'd for 2 years and was the color combo/option group I wanted.

These things really do define "wretched excess" and they're awesome for that. I've drooled over them repeatedly.

Agreed, the original sticker on this was practically $200,000, back in 2016!  That's an amount that only professional sports players, hedge fund managers and successful cardiac/orthopedic/neuro surgeons are paying.

What puzzles and kinda irks me is this car doesn't have PPF on it.  Who spends almost $200k for a new car and doesn't put PPF on it?  I guess that's more of a thing here in Colorado because of all the crap on our roads during winter compared to LA...

I'd be willing to bet you can find a local Cayenne owner to trade brakes with. I'd be quite surprised if the attachment points were not the same between PCCB and standard.

I wouldn't want to trade.  Plan is to get 21" snow wheels/tire and run the ceramic brakes.  If I get into a situation where I need to replace the ceramic rotors then I'll buy "regular" Turbo calipers/lines/brackets used and pair them with new steel rotors/pads.  Then put the ceramics on the shelf in my basement to be included with the car when I sell it.

Used Cayennes are fantastic value. Nice truck!

I learned recently that the ceramic rotors wear from the inside out. To check their service life they are weighed instead of measured. Pretty interesting

Found a few sets of wheels on FB Marketplace, but then decided to also look on Craigslist.  Hardly anyone uses Craigslist anymore, but what the heck, nothing to lose, right?

Happily found a set of wheels, with snow tires even.  Tires don't sound like they've got a lot left in them, but as long as I can get through the Spring snows this year, I'll be happy.  They're off a Cayenne GTS and should fit perfectly, I also like the way they look.  Will check them out tomorrow and hopefully bring them home.

Personally, huge looks upgrade from the wheels your Cayenne came with!

Congrats on the find btw.

Here's hoping you never need brake rotors!

Yeah, fingers crossed on not needing brake rotors!  I do like these wheels alot, I think the wheels coming on the car would look a lot better if they weren't black.  I'm not a fan of black wheels and at some point might have the centers powder coated anthracite or something.

Still waiting to hear from the truck driver on delivery date, hopefully it shows up this weekend.

Somewhat hilariously, I might have to pick up those winter wheels tires with my 911 and its tire trailer...

Friend lent me his gigantic Toyota Tunday to go get the wheels.  Ironically the wheels barely fit into the bed, since he has a tonneau cover on it.  Tires on the wheels were smoked.  Two were down to the wear bars, other two almost there.  They'd maybe get me to the finish of the season here, since I'm done with skiing, but I was able to grab a nice set (8/32nd's left) of Pirelli snow tires off Marketplace.  Dropped by the Discount Tire at the end of their work day near my house just to drop off the wheels/tires so they could get to them the next day and happily they mounted them on the spot.  Also fixed a nail in one tire of my wife's car, plus found sidewall damage one another one of her tires, so I'm going to have to trash these snow tires a season early.  Bummer!

Title and spare key are supposed to show up today.  Haven't heard from the shipper, I reached out to the broker to see if he can get a delivery update for me...

It showed up yesterday, early afternoon.  It's as clean as I hoped, some small rock chips on the front end, very light wear on the outside thigh bolster of the drivers seat.  Annoyingly the seller removed and kept the winter floor mats, cargo mat and Rennline phone mount that was in all the for sale pictures.  They're not super expensive to replace, but if they weren't going to be included he should've mentioned that.

After a few curse words got the Liftmaster 8500 to play nicely with Homelink, still need to program the other doors, but those always work fine. Also put on my winter setup, as we usually get several Spring snow storms here.  Happy I stayed with 21" wheels, even with these the radial clearance on the front brakes isn't all that much.

Spent 1.5 hours at the smog place yesterday, they were packed! Got the paperwork I need to register it this Friday morning at least. Still need to program two more garage doors into Homelink, hook up XM radio, go back to Discount Tire because they kept one of my center caps. They need to rebalance the front wheels, get new tpms sensors as the ones in the winter wheels aren't linking, go to the dealer and have them print out the service records, etc, etc...

Car drives like a dream, super smooth, fast, and sounds great with the factory porsche sport exhaust.  The brakes feel like they could stop a tank, they're incredibly powerful.

Discount Tire ordered me a new center cap and rebalanced all the wheels, which were pretty far off.  Drive into work was silky smooth, which is nice.  TPMS aren't registering, which is weird, as the seller said they worked fine on his 14 Cayenne.  Although the wheels he bought from a 15 are doing the same thing, so our theory is the TPMS are different between 2014 and 2015+.  If we were sure about it we'd just swap TPMS, but it doesn't make sense to pay labor and find out the TPMS are actually just bad, so I'll end up ordering a new set next Fall.

Discovered I don't actually have the factory tow package, doh!  Someone just put an aftermarket hitch on the car, which is fine for my bike or moto rack, but that's about it.  I'm not sure if the car has the factory tow hitch module and/or wiring.  I can't find the wiring but I need to look again more closely.  I can buy a used factory hitch setup from a touareg for pretty cheap, but the touareg tow module won't work.  If my car already has the module then it's all plug n play...

Confirmed no factory tow module or wiring in my car, bogus!  I've found a hitch and wiring off a touareg locally for a good price, then I'll source the cayenne module I need off eBay.  Install it all and sadly have to pay the dealer a few hundred dollars for less than 5 minutes of time to plug in and code it.

Picked up a factory tow hitch and wiring from a VW Touareg locally today.  This thing weighs a ton, so glad I was able to score one nearby.  Will get a used Porsche tow module from eBay and then have the dealer code it all.

Rennline phone mount showing up in a few days, need to buy the large cup holder insert from Porsche.  The center console cupholders were so much better in the Touareg!

I halfway wish these weren't on my radar now. Is there a good tech forum? Are the weak links and their DIY solutions well documented? I see a white 2015 Turbo with 104k and a clean CarFax for $22k not too far from me.

Rennlist is the mother ship for Porsche forums.  The early 958's have more issues than the newer ones, although all of them have transfer case problems.  To the point that Porsche extended the warranty for that part on all of them, although the warranty has expired by now.  You want to make sure the transfer case got replaced under warranty and then the fluid was changed annually.  The timing chain can also be an issue, so listen for a rattle on a cold start.

Time to install one of the gotta have mods, a phone mount.  Rennline makes a nice one that bolts in with no modification to the car.

Pop the vent out, you use two small flat head screw drivers to depress the clips and a plastic trim tool to pop the vent forward

Pull the vent out

Remove the two T27 torx and install the bracket with the ball on it

Pop the vent back in and put the magnet on the ball

I'm undecided if I'm going to retrofit Apple CarPlay to this or not.  I do like the idea of having it on the larger screen but the aftermarket integration still is a bit lacking.  You can't run the factory XM radio in the background, or if you do, you can't change channels and any voice nav from Apple CarPlay won't cut in.  You also end up using the factory bluetooth for phone calls, so when you first get into the car, the OEM system grabs your phone, than CarPlay does, then it hands it back to the OEM system.  Which is really weird for anyone you're talking to...

This Friday I'm going to install the factory tow hitch.

So almost all the service on this SUV happened at Porsche Newport Beach, for the first owner, who I didn't buy it from.  My local dealer was able to print out basically a service summary, but he warned me it had a weird format that really lacked in detail.  He was right, it basically doesn't say anything at all.  I've previously had luck contacting the actual dealer that did the work and having them send me the work orders, since those don't have any owner information on them.

I don't know why the dealers think service orders should be treated as "Top Secret" documents, but they do.  I called them and while I got a polite person on the phone, he absolutely refused to send me the work orders, despite them not having any owner information on them.  Sigh.  I've emailed the GM there but don't have any real hope that he's going to get back to me.

Last night I put in a FCP order for transfer case, front diff and rear diff fluids, engine and cabin air filters, hood struts, 4 regular lug bolts to replace the locking ones and brake fluid.  I've got coolant in my garage, so when it warms up a little I'll go ahead and replace everything and then it'll be good to go.

4/8/25 9:49 a.m.

The weather warmed up, so I decided to go ahead and swap out tow hitches.  Gotta pull the rear bumper cover off first.

Rear wheels off

Take off a bunch of T25's, two 10mm plastic nuts and two T15's to peel back the wheel liner so you can get at 3 T25's holding the side of the bumper cover on

Take off the T25's in the wheel liner holding the side of the bumper on, take off 4 T25's underneath the bumper cover, pop off the plastic covers on the outer tail lights, take off 2 T30's holding the tail lights in place.  Struggle to pop off the wiring harness plug holding the tail lights on.  Take off the T30 holding the hatch stop in place.  Peel back the bumper on the drivers corner and disconnect the two wiring harnesses there.  Pop the bumper off the clips on either side near the tail lights.  Now struggle to remove the bumper cover.  Mine was hung in the middle on something, but a bunch of jiggling and it finally popped free.

I removed the 8 18mm bolts holding the current Drawtite hitch in place, then lined up the VW Touareg hitch.  It fit perfectly.

Blue loctite on the bolts, torqued to 120 Nm.  I ran the wiring harness up into the car

Put the bumper back on

Here's where I screwed up.  I'd done research and read that the Touareg hitch and wiring harness were the same as the Cayenne.  I knew the module was different and sourced a Cayenne module.  However I didn't check the module against the wiring plugs on the Touareg harness.  Yeah, you can see where I'm going with this.  Turns out the big 16 pin plug on the Touareg wiring harness is different than the receptacle on the Cayenne module.

I'm going to have to buy the correct wiring harness from the dealer, which isn't too expensive.  What I'm unhappy about is I have to remove the rear bumper cover again to swap out harnesses.  Sigh.  Of course once I started thinking about this I realized I could've just swapped tow hitches with my wife's cayenne diesel, which came with the factory tow package.  We never tow anything with her car.  Anyways, I'll order the harness from Sunset Porsche and swap it in when it arrives.

I was able to swap out the center cap with the new one Discount Tire bought me and I also scored an OEM set of winter floor mats for $50 this weekend.  So that's all good.

I need to call the dealer this morning, when I started the car to go to work, it gave me a low coolant warning.  I had to put a decent amount in the reservoir and I'd smelled coolant last night and this morning.  CPO warranty for the win here!!

4/9/25 9:45 a.m.

Ended up dropping the car off at the dealer after work yesterday.  I had to top the coolant tank off again just to get it there and then it marked its territory on their very nice shop floor.  Sadly they didn't have a loaner available, so the 911 got pressed into daily duty.  My golden retriever puppy was confused when I told him to hop in, literally the first time a dog's been in the 911.  Had to leave my other golden at home tho, which I feel badly about, but the 911's too small for two goldens.

Not sure what's wrong with the Cayenne, apparently there are still a bunch of plastic coolant pipes that can crack and other coolant pipes that are glued into place, then the glue fails.  Thankfully the CPO warranty will cover it all and I asked them to look over the entire car and fix anything else that's under warranty that needs to be done.

docwyte
docwyte UltimaDork
4/11/25 9:49 a.m.

Looks like one of the coolant pipes popped out, they had to overnight the part in and it showed up a bit late.  Which meant the tech was working on another car and they don't think they're going to be done until Monday.  Doh!! At least they're going to give me a loaner car this afternoon.  The big box from FCP Euro with filters/fluids etc will have to wait until next weekend...
