You could get a truck load of those motors in California for $250 each, $650 would be close buying a whole running car. They aren't that hard to work on, if you want it then go for it.
If the plan is to "Wheeler Dealer" the car, then yeah, make an insanely low offer and go from there. How much do Mk 3.5 cabrios sell for in your area?
$1300 is crazy money for one that isn't working. It doesn't matter how much he spent on rims and tires, a car comes with rims and tires, so it is a moot point. That kind of thing drives me insane.
$800 is more reasonable, but I'd start at $500.
If he just 1000 on wheels and tires ask him where the second set is, those cheap 14's are probably 500 per set at best.
I agree 800 would be a fair price, start low though.

lol thats what I was thinking...
for local prices it's still pretty high... theres one local for $1000... runs drives but auto trans doesn't go into 3rd.
if you're in atlanta $1400 buys one http://atlanta.craigslist.org/atl/cto/2711967934.html
the rest of them in my area (500 miles max on searchtempest) runs about 2500-4000 right now...
He is at $600 motor dropped valve , interior tan tatty , top tatty , what do you think he just called he is leaving town
He's leaving town and hasn't sold it in 2+ months? $400 and tell him that'll save him from having to drag it to the scrap yard.
Just to clear up some misinformation earlier in this thread that car does not have the super cheap 2 liter ABA motor. It is the later AEG motor.
Different mounting points, distributorless, shorter block...ect. Lots of differences. I don't know the price difference however so that point might be moot.
As far as picking it up as a flipper? Can't help. That is too dependent on location and market differences.

Sell $1000 wheels, but some cool used vintage wheels for $400. Then you have a free car, no?

Nice for $600. I can dig it..
He said it dropped a valve? Pull the head off that sucker and take some pics. I love seeing that kinda carnage. Hopefully the guy is just an ignorant berkeley that is a lube tech or something and there is no damage to the bottom end. Did he say how the engine was "blown"?
