I test drove one of these and fell in love. Not just the HP but everything about the car. Didn't feel like the 1st gen that kinda felt like an F-body. Luxury with great power and handling. The one in Miami I checked out was a little more than I'm looking for but you can have yourself a 50k on the clock 09+ CTS-V for around $35k.
Talk me out of this. If I could find a wagon for that price it'd be all said and done but a sedan is all I'm going to get in that price range.
Explain which cars are similarly priced and better? I need GRM to talk me away from this one. Otherwise it's going to be my new DD as the new Mustang and new WRX make me :|
why on earth would you expect us to talk you OUT of that??!!
It's something I want vs. something I think I need. I'm at this conundrum where I'm pretty much debt free, have plenty put away for a down payment on a house (just don't know when I'll be able to purchase due to not knowing where I'll live in a year), and promised my wife I'd at least keep this car for longer than a year. But I've fallen in love.....decisions.
Do it right now so I can live vicariously through you. Now I say!
Don't walk, run to this car.
The best time to regret a decision is after it's been made.

The only reason I can think of to not do it is the other cool cars that you can get in that price range. E90 M3s are getting down there, right? I would assume 997s live there, used GT500 Mustangs, a few other things. I'm sure other folks can name more, I don't shop in that price range very often.
But there ain't a damn thing wrong with the Caddy.
I saw a CTS-V wagon this morning in red and couldn't stop slobbering over it..

They make lovely supercharger noises, have four doors, and look purely badass. I'm pretty sure you should buy one.

Alright, I'll give it a try:
They get 15mpg...if you can keep your foot out of it
Replacing all four tires will run you $1000+
Brakes are equally expensive
Depending on what you buy, it might be out of warranty
Women will want you
Men will fear you
Cops will ignore you
It'll give you great breath
It's an interesting exercise. What's the coolest car one can buy for $35k? Tom_Spangler noted a few (I'd be looking hard at an e9x M3) but a 09+ CTS-V would be near top of my list.
What else falls in that price range?

dude, that's a E36 M3-ton of money for a car that's still depreciating.

That's a good point. $35k today, $25k in ~2 years probably.

...which is hopefully around the time I'm looking fo an UPGRAAAAAYED from my '05. Buy it. Baby it. Sell it to me in two years.

You may have won. Sold for close to $70 new. ~50k miles at $35k. Already depreciated 50%. Down the road could have one a little bit less.
Other cars in that price range I've seen -
- 06+ GT500
- STI of all years lol
- 13-14 Mustang GT
- 1LE Camaro
- E92/E90 M3
What most of those lack is the massive amounts of power with luxury and still low on the visibility radar.
It's a tough call.

It is depreciating, but it's still not that much more money than your average new car, which will depreciate a heck of a lot faster. You're looking at an 09, is it? So it's already essentially 5 years old, the worst part of the depreciation curve is over with. It's not a car you'll ever be upside-down on with a typical 4-5 year loan. Look at it this way, it's not losing value nearly as quickly as a new 13-14 Mustang GT would.

I agree. The CTS-V will hold value on the back end better than your average $35K new car. It will always be the least expensive gen2 so that fact will prop up the value a bit.
At some point trouble-free miles have value so I'm willing to take the depreciation hit - I don't need to break even on every car.
I wish I could buy a manual wagon for $35K... it would be in my garage.

If you could, I might have 2 in my garage!

I can pooponu? Would that work :)?
A C6Z is very desirable but right now I need something with 4 doors or a place to plant 4 arses. CTS-V is similar performance with that option. This world needs more RWD sedans/wagons.
The wife and I formulated a plan. I'll continue to look. Do some research on what options I'd prefer (like Recaros). Watch what happens to the values over the next few months, continue to see if the desire is still there, and see if they drop any more in value when the 3rd gen CTS hits the market. Then pounce on the right deal when I find it. (4th gen if you consider the caterable)
G8 GT or a 300C SRT8 would serve those functions, as well, and probably be a bit cheaper. Not as much horsepower either, of course....

- Insuring a $35K car
- Property taxes on a $35K car
- Consumables on a 500HP car
- Time value of $35K
berkeley that adds up to a lot of cash.
Its funny to see the recent string of threads about making good financial decisions (debt pay down, retirement savings, etc.) then see threads like this.
That said, the car is awesome, and if money is not a concern... do it.

All good points. However, we're all viewing this from different perspectives. Some are still in school... others like me are closer to retirement and have been investing since before the 90's dot-com boom.
You mention time-value... I see the $2K challenge cars and I'm impressed at the effort but if I had to put a value on the hours the cars would be worth $35K.
Time gets more valuable the older I get.
I still want a CTS-V wagon but it is past even my threshold.

You do understand that some folks have $35k cash to plunk down on a car, right?

You know, I heard a rumor.... there's one or two of us that actually buy NEW cars.
