I know the axle housings are mild steel tube but what is the center housing made of: cast iron, cast steel or steel.

Nodular iron.
You can weld to it without any real problems.

Since we're talking about it...any tips for welding to one?
Have a buddy help preheat with a torch. It's hard to get enough heat into the housing with a MIG welder.

I read up and found it to be advisable to weld with a stick using high Nickel content rods and pre-heating the area
