Can anyone tell me if a 2001 Mustang GT uses a transponder key? I am looking at one that has been parked for a while and the owner cannot locate the keys. Trying to figure out how much I would spend not knowing if I want to buy it...Can a Ford dealer make a key based on the VIN?
Hard to sort through Google results for ads transponder keys.

Its been awhile since I've been in one, but I do not think they take the larger(1"squared) PATS key ford uses......
It might still though, and ford should be able to make one....but they'll want to either charge you for reprogramming or a new key/lock set anyways.....
Also, I'd make the current owner do it before any money exchanges hands
My 2003 did have the transponder key and it was $80+ just for a spare and that was with me still having one key. I believe it was $150ish for not having any keys, and the car has to go to a dealer for "programming". I believe your car does have it as well, my buddys 00 Mustang V6 has it too.
2001 used PATS (Passive Anti-Theft System) keys. Most good locksmiths can make them and program them these days in case you don't want to go to the dealer.
My '98 Cobra had the chipped key, I can't imagine that they stopped using it once they started.
