We also averaged 36 mpg and we were hustling pretty good. We also did hundreds of laps on the road course and hundreds of runs in autocross and the car was flawless. My wife almost won SCCA Solo Nationals in the car but lost by .001 seconds (closest finish in SCCA history). The brake discs and pads and the clutch all showed little signs of wear after years of use. The only weakness we found was when we switched to R comps for autocrossing, we broke 1st gear from all the high rpm launches...
What year boxster? Standard or S

I agree... and I drive a 987.
I recently autocrossed a 991 and I feel a Cayman would easily match it in that arena. A GT3 might be a slightly different story, but I certainly wouldn't be embarrassed to show up in a Cayman.
So I recently went through your dilemma. Test drove the ND and it felt like a newer version of my NA, it didn't do much for me. Drove a handful of Caymans. The base 987 was a little anemic. The Cayman S I drove was just about perfect. The 2006-2008 Cayman S' were in the mid 20's when I shopped them. The 2009 to 2012 Cayman S' were closer to the mid 30's, which incidentally was the price of a new engine. So pay the cost up front and not worry about IMS or pay less and play the lotto. The 987.2's were a little thin on the ground thanks to the recession that year.
Then I drove a couple of 997 Carrera S' and ended up buying a 997.2 Carrera S with PDK. My car ADD has been cured for a good while. I deleted the third muffler and am putting on catless headers this weekend. There's something wrong with my brain...
Update! I was talking to the boss as we stood beside "his" new 2019 Miata, and I asked him the question. Remember, he owns a used Cayman and the reason he was at the shop was because we had to get him to bring the ND back.
He said "ND with a turbo". One, because he's concerned about owning something as complex as a Cayman without a warranty (like his). Second, he prefers the seating in the ND, he feels like he's down in a hole with the Cayman. But he'd want the turbo. And he is indeed likely to adopt our 2017 turbo RF as it is now leaving our fleet.
So there you go. Ask the man who owns one. I didn't ask why he wasn't selling the Cayman, that seemed like it would be rude.
