Yeah fair enough, rb's are pretty plentiful in Australia, obviously not so for you guys.

That said, I'll leave this Link here, its l28 related.

Looks like my choices are: L28et M54 Or 2jz na-t conversion

I can source any of the above from local yards and they all seem capable of getting the hp I want while doing so somewhat reliably. Now I just have to make up my damn mind.

You could get a RB30 bottom end for like $150 in australia and have it shipped for like ~$300 and a RB26DETT head mate them together and use the RB26 ITBs and get a RB30/26de making this power. It's been done. You don't need the RB26 head to make this power I don't think but bolt on ITBs help.

Is the early Nissan VQ not VVT? If so that's the answer.

some parts seem abit hard to come by.

I have not had problems. What parts from the RB are hard to come by?

Now youve made the choice hard. Where can I find an rb30 block? Ive checked australia skyline and didnt really see any.

S54 is the easy choice. But like most on this board, we want to spend more money, do more work, for a more mediocre result for the sake of doing it.

Man, all this talk of "high" HP M54s is making my pants tight.

Mate, rb30s are a throwaway item in Australia. They came in aus delivered r31 skylines and the Holden vl commodore. Holden is a gm subsidiary and did a joint venture with Nissan to get a decent inline injected 6 cyl to replace the previous pushrod inline 6 they'd been using for 30-40 years. And by throwaway, I don't mean bad, just fairly damn common.

If your absolutely genuine and hellbent on an rb30, pm me, I may be able to help you out, I should have no dramas picking one up at a low price in pretty good order.

I'd say I'd look for an rb30et for you but most of them have been hammered by the vl turbo crowd and command far to much of a price for an engine that isn't that different from the n/a.

LS1 is the easy button as it is most of the time. I agree with you 100% that we go out of our way to be different.

I know you said you "wanted to retain the inline 6 "character"" but you would be happiest with an sr20 as stated many times before. Easiest, cheapest, and parts availability at autozone. Youtube some sr20 videos you may change your mind, it makes a great sound in its own right.

In reply to chiodos:

The ka24de would actually be an easier swap, and given that people reliably put 300hp the them with stock internals, its right in line with op's goal. Plus then you don't pay sr20 tax. Ka's are a pretty under rated motor really.

As a related point of interest.

There are a few guys out there in z car world who have played around with splicing cut down ka24 heads onto the L series inline 6.
