This. Generators sitting stationary. Allows the oil to be in use longer. 

Another use is air circulation above citrus or avocado fields, basically driving an aircraft propeller at a fast idle all night. 

I did some gas work in a sewage treatment plant for a very large mall.  The backup generator in there was a big block Ford, fed by a 4" gas main snorkeled down to 2" at the intake.  I want to say it was a 429, but it might have been a 460.  Memory is a little foggy, but I do remember checking the numbers on it and thinking that the engine itself was worth some money, so it must have been a 429.  It had a massive oil pan mounted under it.  There was an external pump driven by an electric motor connected to the same battery used to start the engine.  There was a control panel with a key, and you could run the pump independent of the starting of the engine.  The plant operator said it was installed in 1972 when they built the mall, and basically only ran 20 minutes every month.  He couldn't ever recall it turning on because of an emergency, and he had been working there for over 30 years.  The thing was painted beige and it was spotless.

Man, I guess none of you guys have had the same experience with 350s as I've had...  The one in the Scottsdale that got me through my first year of college?  That pan probably could have got me through most of the week without topping up.

Oh... and for whatever it's worth, a SBC generator is fairly small by stationary generator standards.  Most of the ones I usually deal with are 12 and 16 cylinder dual turbocharged diesels.  They're impressive monsters.
