My 03 on the last 1k: water pump, temp sensor, thermostat, headlight bulb, fuel pump, glow plug relay, glow plugs, oil change, fuel lines, rebuild fuel bowl, fuel filter, rebuilt front drive shaft, new u-joint in rear, and that's off the top of my head.

It's 13 or 14 years old. Stuff does wear out after awhile.

Sounds like you're in the 250k range? Somewhere in there these things stop getting older and start getting newer by the piece. About the time all your ancillary devices have been replaced you're due for a motor.

Don't say that. 265k

Mine has 530K. Don't sweat it.

The 7.3 we just resealed was at 396K. Other than leaking from every gasket and seal in the engine, it was and is running perfectly.

We service several 7.3's with over 500k. The 6.0 issues scared alot of people enough too keep them in there 7.3 trucks.

I'm guessing here, but cost for all those parts: $500?

New diesel truck payment for 1 month: $500 (with healthy down payment)

You're doing ok if you put it in perspective

With discounts, water pump 130, fuel pump about the same, gpr 50, glow plugs 80, fuel bowl kit 30, fuel lines 80, fuel filter and cap 50, oil change with chemicals about 130, thermostat 15, bulb 15, sensor 25, drive shaft 350, rear u joint 35. So a lot more than 500 and I only did some of the work myself. So ad about the same in labor.

So all in what, 2k including labor? Most of those parts should last longer than 4 months, so you still come out ahead.

I had to do about 4K in parts (tires for a dually are not cheap!) when I got my truck but since then, it's been 15k miles with just oil changes. Vehicles age and require maintenance but when I look at the cost of a new 4x4, crew cab dually diesel that puts the maintenance costs in perspective.

What's funny is if you look up resale of that truck - when I was looking for mine, I saw a few trucks with 300-400k still selling for $6k.

6k is cheap. A couple of years back a guy in Tx sold one with over 400k for mid teens. The 7.3 superduty really is a quasi collectable. I was just shocked.

With the problems of the 6.0 and the explosive quality of the 6.4, the 7.3 keeps looking better and better.

LOL I wasn't trying to imply yours is on its way out. However you're up in the mileage where continued longevity depends on well it's been cared for.

In reply to Crackers:

260k is not "up in the mileage" for a 7.3L. They are million motors.

I've got twice that on my daily driver, and I drive 1000 miles per week. The only maintenance I do regularly is oil changes.

I worked at a Ford dealership for 16 months. The shop was always full of Super Duties. The only 2 7.3L trucks I saw there in 16 months were mine, and the Service Manager's. Neither was there for service.

Yes. If I do her right, she could be my last truck. Especially since I put no more than 8 to 10k per year on it. Mostly long distance driving, too.

I've had over 500k on a few 7.3 tow trucks. Usually the bodies needed to much work to make them worth keeping but they were still running well.

I think the one thing that annoys the E36 M3 out of me when you talk to people about high mileage diesels is when they reply "It's a Diesel engine, it'll last forever" or "That's just broken in"

Yeah but all the other crap around the motor needs to be replaced.

In this day, the same could be said for many gas engines as well. I've put 400K on several of them.

I would say the era of million mile and 10k hour diesels, in light duty trucks, is coming to an end. They are pushing them to get the HP and torque numbers, and then making them lighter to keep the weights down. That's not a recipe for longevity. There are exceptions to every rule, but as the expense of keeping them running goes up, replacement will become a more common solution, or switching to much cheaper gas engines.

There are already several fleets local to me that have pretty much abandoned the use of diesels, due to the expense of keeping them running and the amount of down time they were experiencing. One is UPS, another other is a county bus line.

I've been kicking the idea of finding a F350 7.3 2wd dually, just to use as a tow monster. I've never owned a diesel. I'm a GM guy, but I like the 7.3 reputation. I have 285K on a 4.8 GMC Z71. I'd like to use the Z71 as an off road trail toy - and go diesel for towing.

The low end torque for our East TN mountain area sounds appealing.

Uhhh, E36 M3 breaks and you fix it. Same with gas powered vehicles. I don't get it.
