I'm sure the Shelby will be available in quad-cab versions and it's probably what they will sell more of, but since the single cab version is lighter, that will be the advertised performance version.

Wonder how much more that one is?

Looks like MSRP for a regular cab, short bed, 2WD F150 XLT is $37,350 with the 5.0/10spd auto trans.

Belltech coilover/drop kit gets you adjustable coilovers, rear flip kit and thicker sway bar for 3-4" drop for $2100

Ford performance drop kit gets you 1.5" drop in front and 2.5" rear drop for just $475 if you want less extreme, more budget friendly drop

Whipple 2.9 supercharger is $7500

Wheels/Tires are $5k

That gets you the same basic truck/performance but leaves $40-50k to blow on badges, stripes and body/interior modifications.

It also gets you no warranty.

Nor did you mention what is likely $5-7k in brakes, forged OEM quality wheels are likely $5k on their own, etc, etc, etc. Or that some people just like it and that it will be rare.

We all know we can throw $15k into a Miata and have it be faster than most cars in the world around a track. But that's not really the point of this thing.

I double-tapped that blue F150 like I was on instagram. That thing is rad, and I don't much care for pickups.

Unless you buy it from that one Ford dealer in Lebanon, OH. They're happy to bolt all kinds of nonsense to a new coyote and send you out the door in a brand new warrantied tractionless nightmare.

I think it's cool. In the world of 100k challengers, this isn't that far of a stretch and provides an interesting choice for people who want a unique factory hot rod.

The wheels are $360/piece on Shelby's website for the big 22s. $330/piece for 20s

You could do a Wilwood kit for all 4 corners for under $4k, and I left off the $400 Caltrac bars too but that would still leave over $30k leftover to play with.

Valid point about the warranty, but it's just 3 years/36k miles. I could basically "self insure" the mechanicals and fund a lot of repair work with that remaining $30k+ from the purchase.

I'm not saying it's not cool. I'm the last person to have an issue with a sport truck. Just that it's insanely overpriced, and an enterprising person with skills and knowledge (one might say a grassroots type) could replicate the same, badass new muscle truck for way way less with all of the same parts. Just trying to show that there's a whole lot of markup going on here for what amounts to off the shelf parts and some badges/stickers.

I should have said "reduced" warranty. You give up the standard warranties for a 3/36k. Which is still pretty impressive considering.

It's the same thing with Roush Mustangs. Overpriced and typically garish to look at.

Right. If you can't or won't make your own, that's fine. I'm glad the Shelby option exists. But for a GRM audience, we should at least acknowledge what this is so we can be educated consumers about it and decide if the easy option is worth the extra cash or not vs the DIY option.

That debadged Whipple supercharger on the Shelby is engineered to the same specs as the Whipple that you or I would buy off the shelf and bolt on in a weekend because Shelby just pulled it off the same shelf. The parts are the same whether or not you pay more for the warranty, Shelby badges and having somebody else do the labor.

Because buying the factory built Shelby with the warranty is the grassroots thing to do.  Right?

I know people who build Locosts to a very high standard for under $10K (not including their time). I also know a guy who spent over $50K on a Caterham which offers nothing significant that the $10k builds don't have other than the cachet of having a Caterham.

Most guys with bucks want the cachet. We're the outliers.

There are a lot of people that think it's crazy to spend thousands or tens of thousands on cars to drive around cones in a parking lot. To each their own. It's not my money, and nobody is required to buy a $100,000 vehicle. If you want one, and can afford it, go for it. I think it's awesome that car manufacturers are building crazy stuff that doesn't make logical sense just because its cool.
