Am I crazy for even considering this? It was parked in a field that burned rather than being the cause of the fire, if it even matters at this point. Talk me down.

Everything between the crank nose and the rims was probably damaged badly in the fire.
Hydraulic system and electricals probably went up in smoke
You're basically buying a chassis that underwent a questionable heat treatment procedure.

Sounds legit to me!

I never said that I would be doing a restoration, or even using the original power plant.
He's asking $500.
Potential for......what?
I could come up with some pretty good ideas, but what do you want to do with it?

Move crap around in my yard.
The thing is that components in the axles, transmission and the rest of the drivetrain could have cracked or deformed in the fire and the springs could be melted flat...like I said, the only thing you can be sure will work at all is the frame itself.
In reply to Woody:
I wouldn't bother. Now, if you were looking for something to stuff a harley engine in and be stupid loud and fast and scare children, then yea, this would be a good start. Too much work and energy for a yard project in my opinion. There's much more fun things to spend that time and energy on. That's just me.
I would get it if it were free. One time I got a free 85 chevy truck.....had a blown engine, but for less than $500 I had a used engine in it and was using it to move junk around our property.
Here's the mule I picked up on Ebay a few years ago for $1000. The guy hadn't sold much so I took a risk and bid at the last second. Drove to Miami the next day to collect. It's a 2wd Mule 1000 (the 1st one). No frills but it makes a great pit vehicle or dog watering vehicle (as seen here).
Leave that hunk of metal where you found it. You can do better.
Yeah if you really want to do this, buy it for scrap metal price so you can get your money back if it doesn't work out.
Worth scrap value, no more. It's potential is very suspect and mostly unexciting in any imaginable configuration I can come up with.
Just posting 'cause this is a better pict of the mule. My friend Leanna (seen here) was battling cancer but wanted go to a music festival so I loaned it to her and her partner for the event. It was originally a Ft Lauderdale Beach Patrol unit and the stickers on the bed are reflective.
there are tons of vehicles of all kinds all over central texas after the fires last year, from pickups to gators like that to john deere tractors and even a horse trailer. to give you an idea of what you are likely in for with this, a lot of the vehicles that were in the fire got so hot that the roof went soft and collapsed. in many places chain-link and barbed-wire fences are sagged to the ground. now imagine what that kind of heat probably did to the frame and suspension components, much less the springs that you'd likely replace with coilovers anyways.
It's worth less than scrap because it's a big glob of E36 M3 in its current state and you will have to get it onto a trailer to move it somewhere more useful.
$500 could get you an old Cadillac to which you then rip the truck lid off as well as the doors and drive it around like that to move junk around with. Sell doors and lid on eBay or something and somehow come out even on the deal. Right?
