I've got an NB I've stripped to a complete bare naked unibody. I'm Sean welding it, and then will paint it. It will be a modified street driver.

The car is red. That's what would match the VIN.

But I'm not a big fan of the red. They all are. Kinda boring.

This is the perfect time to change colors.

WWGRM do?  New color, or match the VIN?

If we were talking a restoration on a high value and/or rare classic, original color. But for a Miata already stripped all the way down the first question for me would simply be whether to go to one of the more 'special' factory Miata colors or an entirely non-Miata color, and then narrow it down from there.

Color is not in the VIN, but I know what you mean. I'd do a different color, and probably a non Miata color just to be different.

Looking at what you have in your GRM Garage go for something different.  Like Corvette yellow.  Or maybe that green that is on the newer Challengers.

You currently have black, charcoal, white and blue.  Boring.  lol

I would definitely take the opportunity to go with a color that's harder to get on a Miata than just plain old red.

If I ever do that with the Manic Miata, I'm going with robin's egg blue. I think MINI and VW both have pretty good versions.

Ok... that's for cutting through it all and making it silly simple! Haha!

Forest green, early 2000s world rally blue. Dodge neon yellow.  Metallic pumpkin orange!! Really, anything but red, but I don't like red as a car color period.

If budget isn't a concern, thermo reactive paint looks awesome on vehicles.

I've always thought Soul Red from an ND was stunning, but might not work on an NB as well.

Red is actually not that common on NBs...  according to M.net, only around 13% of NBs were Classic Red, as opposed to ~40% of NAs.

I like the 30AE orange myself... almost went with this, but decided the tan interior on our car wouldn't work with the orange...

I also like some of the new blue colors... Toyota and Porsche both have similar, but this one is an Audi color:

Dark metallic greens also look fantastic on NBs...

Mariner Blue is also a good color

Nogaro Blue!  I've owned three Audis that color :)

Dark metallic green on an NB (NB1 at least) is easy to get, Emerald Mica was quite popular.

Do you like loud cars?  If so, yellow or orange or the popular GT3 green?

I'd love to see an NB in the Camaro Shock Green (Yellow?)

It is, I really think.  I wasn't trying to be completely flippant (somewhat, sure), but I sometimes think people over think things that are far more a personal taste thing.

You may remember a miata thread I started a few years ago, to simplify the crap of it- including exposing the internal paint- like a Midget or Sprite.  And like that, I think a baby blue Miata would look amazing.

I personally love my red Miata.  But this is your car, not mine.  At the same time, I also love our gold Alfa GTV, when the majority most see are red- the chrome bits and the yellow fog lights look amazing.

I had a GT Jr shell that had an interesting metallic-ish blue that I was going to try to keep, and it would probably look really sharp on a Miata.

I sort of think that a Miata in BRG is a bit of a FU to British Leyland.  But that is just me.

That's the irony of it all.  We can build a better English sports car and we'll paint it the classic English color.

Something nice and bright that you don't see on the Miata often.  Maybe plum crazy purple?

I never liked orange cars, but my first Miata in lava orange mica changed my mind.

I get a lot of compliments on the emerald green mica that I own now.

As was said already, the answer to the question is whatever you like best.
