The one thing looking at so many of these is that many people don't even think about the crash ability with removed crush structure and bracing. The ones with through cages are at least thinking, but most of them will still transfer a lot more energy in an impact. Not that it's unworkable, but restraints should be swapped with that in mind...
I hate to be that guy, but many of them are deathtraps and the awesome may overshadow thinking about the risk.

Yeah, I'm not excited about taking the Zoomboni on a big track for the safety issues it has. It's an autocross toy only and I'm ok with that.

There was a home-built Honda "death kart" on the national news a few months back where the driver/builder was killed. You are correct sir, most would not survive any decent impact, that's why auto-x is their only real place in the motorsports world. I would like to add that mine is being built like a GT-1 or Trans-Am chassis. It will be LOTS stronger than the flexible flyer that a C4 Corvette is in stock form. That being said, nobody should EVER consider driving anything with a cage on the street and without a 4/5/6 point harness and a helmet. Even in a minor crash, with your head impacting the bars, YOU LOSE EVERY TIME! Try it and it's "coloring books for Christmas" for the rest of your life. Be smart when designing something/anything with a cage. Safety rant over.
