My experience with a motorhome with a 454 is to check the hoses.  I had a the small by pass hose in the front of the engine let go and spray coolant all over the engine. Do you know that a 50/50 mix of coolant will produce pretty blue flames when it hits a very hot exhaust manifold!

Indeed. That was on my very first list of things to do. Replaced all the original hoses. They all were dated 10/XX/93. Including the small by-pass hose at front intake manifold to water pump.

I know old thread but still useful...

When you checked the timing underneath did you connect the timing light wire to #5 cylinder wire? You should if you're timing from the scale underneath. Also you have to have the distributor wire connector disconnected when checking & adjusting the timing (disconnect/reconnect only with ignition-engine off).
