I was looking around for one of these 2007-2011 models for my wife and they are fairly reasonably priced. Lower mileage cars seem to be had for around 8-9k and higher ones for closer to 5k.
Is there anything special that I need to know when shopping for one. Do these are fragile/consumable cooling systems like the E46?
Thanks in advance- Cory

Water pump and thermostat are the big failure points; the rest of the cooling system is generally OK. Automatic will sap a lot of the fun out of it, but you will have more cars to choose from. Sport package is mandatory in my book because of the much better seats, but that's a personal choice. At least sit in both sport and non-sport seats before you decide. Suspension will likely be pretty done by now, so plan on shocks/struts at a minimum, and control arms if you really want it to drive properly. As with most European cars, finding one with a good service history will save you a lot of headaches down the line.
I've been very happy with my 128i. They are fun little cars, and reasonably practical for as small as they are.
Yah don’t expect your friends to return your calls if you make them ride in the backseat. A 911 has better rear seats.

I really like the 128i, but I'd look at E90s too since you say its for your wife and not a dedicated "toy car". They're basically the same car, but a pinch bigger and more usable. The weight difference is less than you would think too, its like 100-200 pounds depending on options.
I use one as my daily driver and love it. I've put maybe 35k on it in the last year and a half with no real problems. In fact, it drives better than my dad's new 430. I purposely bought one with an automatic since it was going to be a daily, and have zero regrets. It works fine for normal use and I would buy another with no second thoughts. I reach for the keys to the 128 more than the Boxster S.
