Seriously. There is no reason to spend three times what the car is worth.
$3000 is Allison territory. A good bench build is $600. R&R is $200. Tell him to not spend more than $1000 for a shop to do it.
Is the garage planning on buying another three Caprices to try and pull a working transmission out of at least one of them for that price?
Maybe $3k is to get a late Vortec 4.3 and 700R4 swapped into the car?

make it a vortec 350 and that would be about right and the car would be better in every way.
