$3k sounds like, "go away, I don't want to do this" money. R&R trans on that car can't be more than 3-4 hours in the book. Cost for a stock 700R4 overhaul shouldn't run more than half of $3000, less for a 3 speed.

Or $250 for a tested junkyard unit with warranty, $15 for a filter/gasket kit, $20 for 6 quarts of Dex/Merc, and you're golden.

Seriously. There is no reason to spend three times what the car is worth.

$3000 is Allison territory. A good bench build is $600. R&R is $200. Tell him to not spend more than $1000 for a shop to do it.

make it a vortec 350 and that would be about right and the car would be better in every way.
