Comments here are fairly equal, but the poll is 14-6 in favor of the yota. This at about 8am EST on Wed.
Raze- your thinking is far from alone based on comments in the other threads. OTOH, I've seen competing info about which one will be more expensive based on speculation of which will start at a higher spec.

This has got to be on of the most hyped cars in my lifetime. I can't think of anything that reached this level of lunacy.
I love the specs on this car, more like the 1990's ( a great time). I wouldn't mind a few more hp though. Something north of 225hp even if you have to ring it out above 7,000 rpm.
I really love a handful of newer cars, but I have to ask the same question I always do of the BRZ/86. Would it be better than my garage queen E36 M3? I'm just not sure.
it's way overhyped. Everybody got excited over the name "86" and the pretense of it being the second coming of the AE86.
I personally hate the taillights on the Yota.. didn't the trend for "altezza" lights die a horrid death yet?

Genesis coupe was severely overhyped and was supposed to be OMFG ZAMAZING! I see one from time to time, but it certainly wasn't the Mustang, 3-Series, insert coupe - killer it was hyped to be...
I think it'll come down to price/features/performance, frankly
The only aesthetic difference I really see is in the front bumper, where the Subaru has that weird black plastic protrusion at the top of the grill and the Toyota doesn't. On that alone, the Toyota looks an RCH better.
However, 'round these parts I've had better experiences with the Subaru dealership, and knowing that the drivetrain is almost entirely Subaru parts makes me lean that direction.
I'm sure once both are on dealership lots, one will cost a little less, one will have a slightly more comfortable interior, and there will be other little things that give a bit more solidarity behind going with one over the other.
I like the front of the BRZ but the rear of the FRS.
What a dilemmaThe wheels are too big on both.
I think the wheels are an alright size but the tires are too narrow for the rim used. Would need measurements of everything involved to be sure but they don't look quite right to my eyes.
This is going to come down to color and option availability. I can see owners doing badge removals or swaps on these things when they get on the street.
The biggest reason I think the Genesis Coupe didn't do so well in the market is the styling; techo-ant-eater nose, goofy side window with the sole purpose of being goofy, and a lot of gingerbread stuck to the thing. These cars seem better than that.

The Genesis Coupe is way better looking then the BRZ and FT86.
In all honesty, I will probably be looking for a new car at the beginning of 2013 so I am going to looking at both of these and the Abarth depending on the price for all three. Between the Subie and Toyota I would chose which ever is rawer.

Well, that, and they really didn't perform up to the expectations they had built when they were hyping the fact it was going to have 300hp in one version and a turbo 4-cylinder that was co-developed with Mitsubishi and Chrysler and of which a variant powered the Evo X. Being about 2-300 lbs heavier than expected certainly didn't help, either, nor does fighting the Hyundai stigma when they're not significantly cheaper than a Mustang.
I like the one without power windows and seats, a window that I can stick my elbow into the breeze. Traction control can stay at the factory too.
Looks too much like late model mazdas with the humps above the wheels-it that sure isn't a good thing.
I say neither.
I like the more subtle deck lid, tail lights (although I really don't care for either), and front fenders of the Subaru, but I like the front bumper on the Toyota better. Actually, I like the subtle lines on the Subaru bumper, but I REALLY don't like the shape of the grill. If you could blend the two it would be prefect.
I bet it wouldn't be hard to do when you want to. I'd bet everything is interchangeable.

TC has a switch and can be completely turned off.
Nothing I hate more than a piece of glass digging into my arm when I'm trying to feel cool.

Or a belt line so high you can't get your elbow out the window without chicken winging yourself.

That's where I saw it- says the Toyota won't have the rear spoiler. No nav screen too. So kind of assuming it may be a couple lbs. lighter. But who knows? We may have to wait a bit to find out for sure. I want whichever one can be gotten with a manual transmission and no options. If either were available without A/C and a radio, that's the one I'd get. But I doubt they'd offer such a car in this day.
I've never owned a new car, but this one is tempting to me. Need to know way more and probably would never actually spend new car money on anything. But the thought of special ordering one with the absolute minimum does make me wanna. Wonder if you can get manual windows?!

Considering that power windows have been lighter than crank windows for at least the last ten years, why would you want to?

How do you figure that? Most modern manual window regulators use the same cable design that the power ones do, but with a plastic crank instead of a motor. That plastic crank has to be lighter than an electric motor.
How can this:
Weigh less than this?:
I'm not buying it.

In reply to 16vCorey:
It doesn't make a lot of difference, but it does make some. How much? Dunno, I know some guys who weighed the difference on the MR2 and I want to say it was two or three lbs. For a daily driver, not worth worrying about. For an autocross car, it, along with no sun roof, no power mirrors, no cruise etc can be the couple of thousanths you needed. That's why I went to California to get my stripper Celica. No nuttin'.
Kinda cool to have a pancake 4 up front driving the rear however you look at it. A step in the right direction and all... I said toy on the poll, now changing my mind. Sticker price?
I'm calling my local Toyota and Subaru dealers today to see which will accept a (refundable) deposit . . .
