Also; anyone know just how much the 1G Mazda MPV shares with the B2600? I see high/low range 4wd, auto locking front diff, G6 like B2600 or 3.0 v6 JE motor. Solid axle rear, presumably the bigger stuff. Trans is an R box.
And there seems to have been a few lifted ones.

LoL I had no idea from the email that it was you. The 1G mpv idea reminds me of the Delica's. I've seen some good mods for the astro's for offroading. I know on overland or something there was a good thread on them adding a proper Tcase or something.

This was a fun trip with my cousin until his wrangler got stuck in neutral in the transfercase. I towstrapped him out to the road and then we picked up a uhaul dolly and I towed him all the way back home
This was from the week after I got it, immediately went on an overlanding 4x4 trip with a bunch of guys from the Seattle area. This was on stock all seasons and it did really well.
I don't really think its much bigger than the Xterra or 4runner
It looks big because it's tall, but in true Montero fashion, it's narrow. That was probably the last SUV you could get that still had the same COG/track-width proportion of all those trucks Consumer Reports flipped in the 80s. Lol

Ok but seriously. I happen to have a full HKS PFC FCON with GCC, FCD, and an EVC 2 to match that is PNP for this car.

I have a 98. No high/low range. It's push button 4wd with a center locking diff. If you manage to find an uber rare early 1st gen 5 speed 4wd I think those might have high/low range.
It always did really well in deep snow. Drove through a foot and a half like its nothing. Always wanted to hit some light off road stuff with it but never did. Currently not roadworthy and we need to get rid of it. 180k miles. Starts runs drives, needs brakes and a battery. Oil leaks. Sometimes won't shift to 4th gear. Throwing code for a trans solenoid. Good Michelin ltx tires. Minor body rust, tailpipe rusted off. Sell it to ya cheap.
4 banger or the V6? If 4 banger, maybe somewhat interested. If V6, no thanks. (Only because i have a spare manual for the 4 cylinder already).
Wait nevermind i don't think it works like that. I have a RWD trans.

I think you could get that thing running with that method, but maybe not all the way home. Sitting for 8 years is kind of a while. I berkeleying WANT that car tho. It's the TII version of my 86 that I had in highschool. Interior looks really nice. Wow. Get it so I can hate you.
