So, say you had the whole challenge budget in cash on your dresser. Say you had a year to buy/build.

Car has to complete one lap and challenge in exact same form. Literally the only change being oil and stickers.

What, how, and why would you build?

Im seriously considering trying to do this, thanks to mazdeuce.

Finish position goal is not dfl. Second to dfl is acceptable in both events.

You'll want something durable, able to take a beating (OL) and capable of racking up the miles. At this price point, What about a 5-spd S-10? Suspension works, it's right wheel drive, parts and pieces available everywhere. Setup a nitrous kit for drag runs.

Stampie: If you want to, ill let you have it for one lap next year. In the exact same form as challenge this yer.

I dont have big enough balls or enough chest hair to drive that thing across the country.

P71 from an auction. Crazy tires and wheels, hack the fenders if needed. Lots and lots of nitrous.

In the interest of reliability and ease of keeping on the road:

Any $500 econobox
bolt on engine mods
bolt on suspesnion mods
wheels + tires

Seems like avoiding a DNF in both events is the key to not being DFL.

Reliability would be my biggest concern, getting stranded in the middle of nowhere would suck. Comfort would be a concern as well, so no Lotus 7 clones. Some measure of performance would be nice, so at least the ability to add some big tires or tighten up the suspension.

A P71 is an obvious choice, slap on some meaty BFGs and strip out weight.

P71

A UGMS (universal GM sedan) like a Bonneville SSEi, supercharged Regal or Monte Carlo SS would last and have some legs at the track.

Buick

A Honda Accord Sport with a manual would be good. I'd upgrade the shocks, add sway bars and sticky tires. You know it won't breakdown.

Accord

In reply to Dusterbd13:

I don't have much chest hair myself but I know I have enough ass hair to do it. Horatio Jackson and Sewall Crocker drove cross country in this:

Throw a second race seat in it, put some good memory foam on both, and build a DIY cooler AC unit (bonus is cold beer on arrival).

Screw the pansies in their $100,000 car with leather seats. We're southern men. Show them what that means.

So far, s10 and p71 are appealing.

I had honestly thought about a first gen neon. Or eclipse.

Keep them coming. Wild, crazy, stupid, but doable is the name of the game here.

More i think about this, the better of an idea it becomes.

My other though was used nascar chassis under a 1956 plymouth savoy with a 440 and automatic. Complete with patina and boom tubes..mm.

I think...
Jeff who competed and took 10th in the $2015 has also done The One Lap. What I am not sure is if he did the OLOA in the same 3rd Gen Firebird that he did $2015 in. Either way, a Firebird/Camaro would be a good choice too.

There's a $1000 5-spd Elantra for sale in Lafayette. Offer $800, set of springs for $150, rear sway bar for another $50, cut off muffler and some wheels and tires..... Ain't gonna be fast but it'll finish.

Yeah, I want to do Targa Southland and OLOA and even though I own one, Miata is not even remotely on the list.

As much as bias wants me to say foxbody, i think a used crown vic/marquis would be a good idea. Bonus points if you find a 2 door variant down in the land of less rust.
