So I decided that the l28et (stock turbo motor for the 280zx) would be better served in my 280zx.
This leads me to a question about what to put in the 240z. I want to keep it a straight 6 but cant decide which one to go with.
Wants from the motor:
300+ whp
Reliable on track (want to endurance race/club race/time trials)
Parts availibilty thats not ridiculous
Choices so far:
Rb25det,
2jzgte,
Some bmw six?
Arent the sr20 swaps popular? Seems would be great for track to keep weight off the nose. I see the alure of rb to keep it nissan but you said parts availability thats not ridiculous. Ive got an l28 long block just sitting if you want another haha.
I test fit a gm 60 degree v6 in a 280 one time. The crank pulley was behind the axle centerline up front. My thoughts went to a fwd 3500 with turbo and a camaro five speed as cheap, lightweight fun with a 50/50 weight distribution. Might even have a rearward weight bias.
Still want to build one someday.
Ive thought about the sr20 but I dont like the sound.
As for v6 if I went that route I would use a vq engine.
Keep it in the family. SR20 or VQ. Either will have more than enough HP to make it a lot of fun.

Check out the Z / Nismo forums as there are some cool purist approved combos available that would be easier than swaps. There are some awesome options from the various z parts bins involving different head and block combos. With a cam and good carbs there is something in the mid 200's available on a budget with mostly OEM components.

Ka24de, east fit, cheap, should have a reasonable aftermarket.
It's got the same bell pattern as the Nissan L series 4 cyls (L18, L20, L24) and the z series (z18, z20, z24). So should be easy to get a manual trans.
Ka-t.org or antrx will have plenty of useful info.
Also, ka24 keeps it nissan and keeps the capacity 2.4, true to the badge.
Dude, 1uzfe. Ponies. Torque. Length of a four bang. Cheap. Reliable. Great sounding. Potential. All components exist for the swap to a 350z six speed. Well documented. ITBs sound sick. Real dual exhaust. Multiple oil pan configurations. Not a common swap in the s30. I could go on all day. Just get it over with.
Oh yeah, only 12 wires to make it run and run well.
In reply to Trackmouse:
Hmmm. That could be fun. Im guessing they are cheap?
Also can a vq make 300whp easily?
Easily? Yes. Cheaply? No way.
Ok. Well. I'm just going to say it. Chevy 350. They've been doing that swap for 40 plus years.
Well... you could go stupid weird and put a Jaguar motor in it
So what about bmw engines? Any out there that are cheapish and can make 300hp?
M60 or m62 can make 300hp. I've seen motors with ecu and hanged go for less than 1g. I think they might be kind of wide though.
I vote rb20/25.
BMW motors:
I'd do a 1uz in my e30 before I'd do a BMW V8, unless I had the cash for an S62, of course.
For i6, the only one to get you to 300+ NA, would be the S54 for the e46 M3. Gorgeous motor and they are getting cheaper, 8000rpm redline, stock ITB's, it's a real motorsports engine. Can be had for a few grand. 6 speed is an option. The SMG 6 speed can be converted to full manual for ~$200 in parts.
Any BMW i6 can be turbo'd to 300hp with no problems with a fully stock block and head.

I've always wanted to put a V12 engine in a 240Z. Something about that long hood makes it seem perfect.
It meets none of your parameters. Just gets me excited.
Carry on.

Put in a turbocharged 13B rotary and make Nissan fanbois head explode.
A VQ can make 300 WHP easily. The 3.7L are dynoing anywhere from 280-295 stock depending on the dyno and conditions. A free flowing exhaust and they are at 300 WHP or so darn close it's a rounding error away.
Stay L series. I'm a guy who is fine with swaps, but theres something about that proper old inline 6 that is so right in those cars. Add Webers, make glorious noises, and even go pretty quick.
A Chevy LS motor is light if you pick the all aluminum version and 300 HP is available in stock condition!
I know of a 240Z with this conversion and the car is FAST! And it handles well too!
If I had the $$$$ in your situation it would the be the BMW S54. Glorious, glorious engine.
Can't imagine how well it would scoot in a 240Z.
So far Im leaning towards either the s54, vq of some sort or sending rebello a bunch of money and building a 3 liter L series.
