My battery completely went dead this week and I figure it is a good time to do get a what I have always wanted, a light battery.

The car is a e39 M5 with all of the factory audio, sat nav, power heated seats seats removed. 

A few of the batteries I am looking at are 

XS Power S-Series 680 

  • CA: 370
  • CCA: 326

Odyessy PC680

170 CCA

520 Cranking Amps for 5 Seconds

 

Will these be powerful enough? 

Thoughts and advise appreciated!

Hawker Odyessy PC680 has always been my standard go to... I think as long as you don't need any CCA for use a lot in a very cold climate its a great choice as a starter battery. Never had any issues with them. Last one I ran was in my FR-S, was going to run one in my new project MR2 but was backordered so I went with the PC925LMJ instead. Recommend get the metal jacketed version for higher heat rating.

The PC680MJ that was in my FR-S with full factory electrical...

I have a XS Power in my 78 Z28 that is bracket raced and street driven a few times a year. 4 going on 5 years old. Never an issue. I keep the trickle charger on it.

I'll be honest, in an E39 M5 will you likely notice the difference of 40lb off the front end? I'm not trying to be snarky, just curious with the total amount of mass and the amount of torque on hand. 

 

I picked up a motobatt mhtx20 back in July, 550 cranking amps at 32 degrees, under 10lb. It's light enough I bring it in and put it on the trickle charger and use it in the EGT and 323. 

 

They also make a mhtx30 which has 650cca and is also under 10lb

Well it is in the rear-end but you have a good point. Not the best car for a weight loss program. However, with the battery I will have taken out 400lbs and I have to say the car feels so much better. It is getting into the e46 M3 weight territory with some good HP and torque.

Knowing that it's not the first step in the weightloss program makes sense, 400lb is significant and the 5lb here, 12 there, 40 here definitely adds up and that makes a huge difference.

I would not put a ltw battery in anything besides a dedicated race car. Hell, I have a miata (full size) battery in my dedicated race car. Chasing electrical gremlins caused by low voltage situations no burns. Jump starting your car at work also no bueno.
