I have an old Sienna that that needs tires. We are planning a couple road trips this year and would like to take the Sienna for the extra room. I was hoping to upgrade to a newer van but with the crazy used market I think I'm going to keep this Sienna for a little longer. It needs new tires before the trip. I don't want to put much in it because I do plan on replacing it in the near future. I'm looking for a set of cheap all seasons to get me through the next year or two. I may be asking too much but hopefully I can find some cheap all season that are reasonably safe and won't send me into the ditch at the slightest hint of rain or snow.

I have never purchased super cheap Chinese tires before, I dont really know anything about them. I found the "dextero" brand at Walmart. The only thing that stands out is they are made in the USA in a brand new facility in South Carolina. I guess that makes me feel a little better about them versus other no name Chinese tires.

Size is either 205/70/15 or 215/65/15.

If anyone has any thoughts or suggestions for cheap tires I would really appreciate the advice

Thanks

The company that made them makes a whole lot of low-tier tires to order.

I bet if you looked up the model name and tire size, you'd get two, three, four different "brands" that all look the same.

They're not bad tires.  They aren't super awesome, but that isn't their goal.

No clue where they are made, and not convinced it matters that much anymore. But I've run the dextro from Wally a few times in the past, and got good life out of em. Might get better mpg, ride quality, or other niceties from a more expensive tire; but then again, might not. Never felt unsafe with them on an appliance car.

For my Prius fleet I have been buying Falken 201s and I'm very happy with them.

I have not done the Dextero brand but their website says they are HQed in Rancho Cucamonga,  CA.   So is Falken/Sumioto.  My guess its one of their brands.

Those are what is known in the local vernacular as "Maypops."

Because of the difference a good set of tires makes on pretty much any vehicle, I don't buy "cheap" tires.  I'd say Generals or Continentals are about as "cheap" as I'll go.   Honestly, buy 4 at tire rack and get a local shop to put them on.  How much money can you hope to save?

To quote those guys at that tire company "Because so much is riding on your tires."

It's a low bar to clear, but I'd say the Dextero/similar tires I've mounted are constructed way better than, say, Goodyears.

Ive got a used set on the wife's minivan. Came with the unbent wheels

They don't suck. No snow here, but fine in the rain.

"We are planning a couple road trips"

So it won't be just you riding on the tires.

Road trips - meaning mid to long distance travel.

Why would "super cheap Chinese tires" be appropriate considering the statements above?

We used to call recaps maypops. Most folks on here don't even remember when buying recaps for a car was not an uncommon practice.
when the ultra cheap furrin tires started coming over, we started using "maypops" for them, as well. But there are a lot of things not made in USA, that are better these days. I would predict that not only have you never run a dextro, but you can't name one single person that has had a catastrophic failure with one. Much less knowing of any issues with them concerning safety. But if a big name spends a fortune in advertising campaigns, they obviously are telling the whole truth.
As I said, no problems with the tires. Top tier, maybe not, but unsafe? Not hardly.

Falken/Sumitomo are probably as cheap id go on the tire scale. GT Radial looks alright for a cheaper tire too.

I've had the falken tires a couple times. A bit less grandma mobile looking tire. A hair more grip, maybe. Could have just been car and tire size. Did not last as well, though, and road a tad worse. Again, hard to say, since different car. Definitely no safer, so no advantage there.

I did a search on simple tire and a MasterCraft tire was coming up on the first page for low to high $ under 215/65r15. Maxxis also makes decent cheapy tires.

Costco has current deal on Bridgestone $150 off when you spend $699

Goodyear Stores $150 of on select set of four tires.

Pep Boys buy three tires get the forth free.

I wouldn't buy tires for a family vehicle on price point only especially knowing you have a couple trips planned. We get enough crap from China not sure I'm ready for tires also.

Except they're not Chinesium tires, they're engineered and manufactured in the US.

I'm with you. In my opinion the tires are the most important safety feature on the car. I cheap out on some things, But I always get good tires that have a good reputation. Having been in a car that had a blow out at 70 mph thanks to cheap tires, hard pass on experiencing that again.

It's not that Chinese tires are necessarily bad - All of my rally tires are made in either China or Taiwan and hold up great. But that's in a car with full safety gear roll cage etc that is more likely to hit a tree than blow out a tire anyway. On my street cars no way.

So, let's see if we can summarize the two key points in this thread:

1) Tires are important.  You want good tires.

2) Dextero tires are made by Giti Tire Group headquartered in Singapore.  They are a major global tire manufacturer.  Their US market brands--GT Radial, Primewell, and Dextero--are manufactured in the USA at their plant in Richburg, SC, which has recently been awarded IATF and ISO 9001 Certifications.  Dextero tires are not made in China and might actually be some legit tires, especially at their price point.

Just to clarify I was speaking in generalities about cheap tires, not about Dextero, since I have no firsthand knowledge about them whatsoever.  As much as I love to be an American I'm under no misconception that things made in America are necessarily better than things made in other countries. There is plenty of industry here that is seriously lacking in quality control as well. Made in America is a logo or applicable to creating jobs here rather than necessarily meaning a product is better. With regard to tires it just comes down to what the specs are and what quality of rubber they are using. I don't think the rubber for either Chinese or American-made tires actually comes from those countries....

Side note: The tire is on my trailer are all made in China, And are exact copies of the Goodyear Marathon trailer tires, which for their entire production run were made in China at the same factory.

I've been dealing with Chinese contract manufacturers for 20+ years in a variety of manufacturing areas and many are very good strait up companies that delivered consistent as specified product. Unfortunately increasingly I've seen companies send fake 'good' samples,  'decontent' products after the first couple shipments,  completely fake quality control reports from 'ISO certified' venders, and all sorts of other shenanigans.  One of the worst issues is that entire batches of products are not QC'd and some large percentage of the products are not to spec.  In some industries (Toys for example) containers of what is essentially landfill are sent over.  For the foreseeable future I personally would not trust a Chinese tire. Chinese made Iphone-  sure!   Good to see a global brand setting up shop in the US to make tires.

Thank you all for the advice.

After a little further digging I found not all Dextero/GT tires are made in their USA facility. Dextero has a chart on their website that indicates where each available size is made. Of course the size I need is made in China. I imagine their tires are fine either way, there just doesn't seem to be much long term data about how they hold up.

I was able to find Uniroyal Tiger Paw touring A/S for about the same price as the Dextero at Walmart.com. They seem to be a good mid level a/s tire and are highly reviewed. I think I cought a pricing anomaly on the Walmart website, the same size tire goes for ~$20-25 more elsewhere.
