A good friend of mine is looking to replace his worn out Accord and knows of an S40 he can get at a fair price. The turbo has recently been replaced. It has 190k on it. I'm not sure of the year or even if it's a manual or a slushbox. I'll try to post up some more details later. Anybody got any experience with these?

The 1st generation S40 was slushbox only, and I don't think the 2nd gen came with a 1.9 so plan on an auto 1st gen. I haven't heard anything great nor terrible about them.

The Gen1 versions were a joint venture with Mistubishi. Therefore, they are not really part of that reputation that Volvo had from the '90's and before for stout vehicles with high durability (if you buy into that.)
I always saw the Gen1's a a tidy little sedan but the 190k would scare me away unless the price was really right or the documentation was there to support a higher price.

Yes, Gen1, all auto.

Yep. Rebadged Mitsu Carisma. Had one that was almost new on the lot for the brief period I was selling cars, and it was not horrible. It wound up being the last sale I made, to a guy who had come in to look at Mercedes C240.
