Well, as expected my sight-unseen "deal" wasn't as good as I was led to believe. Small "scratches" that would not photograph turn out to be crows feet all over the car.

F it, it's going satin black if I have to paint it.

To properly fix crows feet, it's got to go down to metal, then sealed, then bondo'd/smoothed, etc?

Fixed it. We sensor our curse words and letters on our board.

What kind of car is it? Satin black looks great on everything! But don't you have to be careful when you dry it so that you don't make it shiny by accident?

The roof, hood, and part of the deck have crows feet EVERYWHERE. The doors and pillars have misc scratches....no point in just painting the roof then.

Not sure if this is a job for a first timer, but I would plan on using BC/CC with a flattener in the clear (flex-n-flat has been suggested).

Just confused if I need to go down to metal....and if I do must I skim coat it with filler and sand again?

Paint jobs matter?

I always thought effort was put into proper wheels and suspension before we went worrying about paint.

I am in the same boat, my E30 had a crazed paint job and I basically had 3 days to get SOME paint on it so that it wouldnt rust (mountains with LOTS of salt, i needed a stopgap measure)

I got off all the loose stuff i could and proceeded to primer and paint it using rattle can rustoleum (rusty metal primer and blue paint)

I intend to strip the car and make another go at paint this summer when the weather cooperates and time cooperates, but here is the result of just plain painting over it (not the best looking, but its a good 20 footer)

(the blue was a touch more smurfy then i thought it would be)

as i said, that was a quick "dont let it rust" job to hold it 6 months (and also evaluate look and durability of just rattlecaning it) that is the result of one coat (after primer) and going back and touching thin spots.

my plan calls for stripping the car this summer and probly going the same route again, say what you will, a careful application of rattlecan doesnt look too horrible. The roughness is due to lack of stripping the car (3 days to do the whole job, remember) and lack of prep, the drivers fender I did strip.

when i go back, full strip, 3-4 coats of paint and some wet sanding and buffing is in order. oh yeah, probly using the darker blue rustoleum metal flake.

I am also debating if i want to keep the flat black hood look. (looks too ricer-ish)

Well, it keeps the car from rusting away...

Rusty van and wheels from a porsche. Sounds so wrong, looks so right.

My fairlane is going to end up like that if the harbor frieght tent I have around it tries to fly away a few more times. Its rubbing all that fancy paint off for me.

Some women put Preparation-H on them, shrinks the skin down. I've not seen a woman paint them yet, but if you see one .....

Some do. If you see a trowel on her makeup table... (That was just WRONG. )
