I have two halogen (I’m old fashioned, haven’t bought into the LED craze) fog lights I want to mount to light up the bed of my 2006 Sierra. I’d like to have them up high like either side of my third brake light/cargo light.
I don’t like the idea of drilling holes on the roof and have no other obvious mounting tabs. Truck has a roll-up bed cover and I’m NOT doing the bed-rail LED strip thing.
i can buy (cheap) or make simple brackets but how do I mount them?
Bonus points for the ability to swivel them to the side of the vehicle when needed.
Will your truck accommodate what is commonly called a "headache rack"?
Could you fashion up something similar to act as a light bar?
Walmart Sample $85
Back Rack Brand has many optional mounting brackets
Another sample and a reminder to shop for used
That first one is pretty cool and cheap. The one thing I’m trying to keep going is removing stuff that I don’t need. I’ve always done it and I probably always will. As much as I like that idea (thanks btw) I am ever-seeking to lighten my vehicles. I wish mounting a couple aluminum brackets didn’t require me to drill through the sheet metal
Plus any of those headache racks would force me to get rid of my bed cover.
How about magnetic mounts?
Another option would be to mount them in the bed, back by the tailgate facing forward like the factory bed lights on the RAM trucks
In reply to APEowner :
I actually thought about magnetic but I really need a more permanent solution. And I really need them to be facing forward.
Hmmm, not very high up but this location might work:
I can always make a taller bracket. Maybe add 4” to the height of these?
Suction cup on the window with a bracket holding the lights where desired?
Or use a flat base with some 3M trim tape mounting them to the window or top of the cover/bed?
Thanks for reminding me to see why I don’t have a light in the bed of my Avalanche.
The bulb is blown been that way for 80k miles. Oops.
Don't have a photo of it. A few years ago at a fire station visit for my kids school, I spotted a couple large LED flood lights pointing to the passenger side of a fire chiefs car. They ran the length of the roof front to back. The lights are on separate aluminum bar stock. One inboard the other. They unfold going up to pure vertical and lock in. One at the front of the roof and one at the rear. It had a spring mechanism to counter weight the action. They lock in the vertical to help light a site.
Maybe you can search for first responder vehicle equipment and find something.
This is pretty old school but I don't think they make them anymore:
They were made by a company called Baja Champions which I think was owned by Pilot (the automotive accessory light company).
I found one on eBay awhile ago but I can't find it anymore.
It was basically a steel bracket that mounted under the 3rd brake light.

Now THATS interesting!
I may have found an idea: a CB mount...
Whatever you do to mount them, put them on a swivel so you can point them at the bed or forward as needed.
In reply to stanger_missle :
Proving there's no such thing as a new idea I was thinking of that as a concept/build your own.
In reply to Rons :
What is funny is that I had the same idea for my Super Duty but decided to check and see if something like I was envisioning already existed.
Yep, looks like they were manufactured up to about 2006 or so.
It seems like such a simple concept by mounting to where the third brake light mounts.
The second picture with the speakers just screams "90s eXtreme!!!!" to me haha
