Okay, you asked for it, fasted. Here's the TR4's history as far back as I've pieced it together.
Purchased at a dealership in Palo Alto, CA, if the license plate frame is an accurate indication. First owner that I know of was an older gentleman (not sure of his name, but I could probably dig that up), a marine biologist and professor at a CA college. One day after class, he came out to find that it had rained about an inch. He knew it was about an inch, because he had left the top down on the TR and the floorboard were full. Apparently, he was so mad he sold the car on the spot to a passing student for a buck. $1.
Student transferred to the University of Kansas, and graduated in the early '70's. He was planning to attend grad school in St Louis, but didn't have housing sorted out yet, and needed a place to stash the car for a few months. So, he convinced one of his professors (an anthropologist) to hang onto the car for him for no more than six months, "until I get a garage, then I'll come back for it". Professor moved it out of the barn about 10 years later, where it slowly attempted to sink into the earth for another 17 (ish) years.
My grandmother and mother made friends with the professor's wife, became close enough that we still have holiday dinners at each others' houses. I found the car whilst exploring around after one such dinner when I was about 12. Fell in love with it. It became my standard answer to "what do you want for christmas/birthday". Parents eventually caved and picked it up for my 14th birthday. Dragged it out of the mud, loaded it on a flatbed trailer (complete with buckbrush in the floorboards), contacted the previous owner (who, after grad school, went on to be the Missouri State Parks and Wildlife director, or some such) and he mailed us the title with a brief history of the car and best wishes.
Kept me off the street during high school. Drove it to my junior prom. Ran into some issues with fuel delivery, parked it in the barn while I attended college.
Now I'm out and have a decent job, and too many projects to fit it in. Gotta sell some of this other crap so I can get after the TR. It would kill me to repeat the previous owner's actions.
