Will have to see the first race with these:

https://www.racecar-engineering.com/news/formula-e-gen3-spec-revealed/

Also no actual brakes in the rear, rear braking is by regen only.

Only teaser pics so far but will probably look like an ultra-futuristic Indycar:

Are they still doing that FanBoost crap?

Unfortunately yes...

Update: On top of Fanboost going away (!), here's a compilation of clips from testing, including a lot of high-speed wheelspin:

Teams are apparently still having a lot of trouble with the all-new cars and tires and they expect that there will be a lot of untapped performance left in the cars in the first event.

Looks like launches are going to take some practice! They look legitimately quick.

Finally had a chance to watch the first race from a couple weeks ago, it's not quite F1-quick but it doesn't look far off, especially at lower speeds. Also nearly zero aero impediment to overtaking:

The racing looks strangely awkward. I can't put my finger on it, but they look really slow out of the corners.

I still think a racing series that is like an electric version of Australian Supercars would be a lot more fun with all that bumping and rubbing.

So maybe a little slower then F3 now, but faster then a Formula Ford.

I think those tires are limiting forward acceleration, probably a deliberate choice to make them more challenging to drive.

The size of the cars looks quite a bit smaller than an F1 car, which certainly helps with passing on those tight circuits. The utter lack of a rear wing probably helps a lot with following closely, they're making all of their downforce under the car. In my limited understanding, that causes a lot less mayhem behind.

Thread resurrection: The first race with a mandatory pit stop for "refueling" is coming up, cars will get a 10% charge in 30 seconds:

https://www.engadget.com/transportation/evs/formula-e-will-finally-debut-its-fast-charging-pit-stops-this-weekend-144235800.html

Each pit gets only one quick charger and they're not allowed to do anything else during the charge, minimum stop time when charging is 34sec though so the other 4 seconds are free for other work. All the details are here:

https://www.fiaformulae.com/en/news/518375

I expect that will greatly reduce the "peloton phase" of the race, but I wonder if the cars are going to come out of the pits with battery packs close to overheating...charging at 600KW is like dumping the full output of two Viper engines into the battery pack.

I haven't been able to see the Jeddah race yet but I ran across this graph which suggests that the "PitBoost" has completely done away with the "peloton phase:"

I'm trying to imagine how awful the sound of 20 or so of those things would sound screaming by like a pack of really loud angry hornets.

No need to imagine, it sounds a bit like a busy day at an indoor RC track:

I tried to watch a race a week or so ago,not sure I made it thru the 2nd lap before moving on.

About the same as the last time I tried early last yr.

Tight concrete barrier lined "tracks" suck as much as anything about trying to force the series forward imo.

Thanks for pointing that out to me, I missed it earlier. Glad my hearing only goes up to about 12 khz although I still couldn't hear through the announcer's screaming.

Finally found a way to watch the race with a combination of official sources and bugmenot.com wink With the "PitBoost" there's no longer any "peloton phase" but they're not going 100% all the time either, it's more like F1 where drivers will back off a bit at times, but it's to save battery charge and temperature rather than tires and fuel like in F1.
