2000 Grand Am 2.4L

code P1632

Fuel pump was replaced about 3 years ago, ignition lock cylinder was replaced within the past 2 years. Dash lights up like a x-mas tree ( Security, Trac off, Service vehicle soon, etc)

Once in a while car will crank but won't start. Security light flashes, wait 10 mins car will start. When car does run, every so often it will buck and stall out. Wait a little while then it fires up and drives like normal.

Car is going back to the shop in the morn for a possible security relearn/diagnosis.

Any possible thoughts/concerns/worries about continuing to drive this car with these problems?

IIRC those grand-am had immobilizer issues and something had to be done from behind the radio to fix it.

yup... there's a little yellow wire. I did some more research after I posted this thread.

the general consensus is if you cut the wire with the engine running, that would disable the Passlock. another option is to cut the yellow and black wires and include adding a resistor between the two so it would still work

Re: bucking and stalling. I had a 93 and it was extremely sensitive to having a clean fuel filter. Try changing that.

I now there's a way to bypass the system on Camaros that costs about $17. I found it a couple of years ago for a guy at work.

I had to do the resistor fix on my aurora.

Take an Ohm meter, measure the key pellet and then cut the wire going to ignition assembly and splice in the resistor.

wire breaks from age and the tilt steering moving around.

If you do not have the right value of resistor on hand I have a million different ones and could mail you one for free. PM me with the value and your mailing address if you want to take me up on this offer. Would take less than a week to get to you.

Oh just set him al 15 different ones.

My wife's 98 cutlass is starting to have issues with the passlock also. The system is designed to cut fuel when it gets an improper key value. In our case the car is going into "learn" mode when you try to start it and won't let you start the car for 10 minutes.

I just haven't gotten around to digging out the ECU to override it.

I don't know what the "15 different ones" are, just know I have a cabinet of literally hundreds of different values of resistors. Bought out an engineering house's prototype lab back in the day and they have come in handy often enough I just keep them..

Talked to the mechanic today and he seems to think the fuel filter is the culprit.Reason being is I had the car scanned at AdvanAutoO'PepBoyReillyZone and picked up a P0171 ( system too lean bank 1)We are pretty sure the filter was never changed when the pump was swapped out. ( evil reminder not to go back to that shop - 'nother story for a nother day)Cleared that code, scanned it again a day later and that code didn't come back up but that's when we found the P1632

the car is at the shop overnight so they can check out a couple more options before throwing parts at it. Also looked and possibly a bad hub assembly is causing the Trac OFF light to come on as well.

it's been a week and the verdict is that we should " burn it" according to the mechanic. He replaced the fuel filter and reprogrammed the security system.Took it for a test drive and it still stalls out.I mentioned about tearing into the dash, but he doesn't want to take the chance on it affecting some other system in the car.

Not a 2.4 expert, but that suspiciously sounds like either and Ignition module or crankshaft sensor failing. On the later 3800, the crank sensor will intermittently fail causing the stalling. A failing crank sensor will not cause a CEL or trouble code on those cars. Don't know if this applies to the 2.4.

To add insult to injury, the mechanic that was helping us out with the car got into a real bad car wreck. He was drinking and rolled his truck a couple times. We have decided to cut our losses and get a different car.

We crossed over to the dark side and entered the land of Toyota 5S-FEs. Picked up a 2000 Camry for $1500 on New Year's Eve.
