I always wanted this one, kit #8880:

They show up from time-to-time on eBay, but whenever I think I'm ready to pull the trigger, I have to spend the bank I saved for it on something more practical. Being a pragmatist sucks sometimes.

Good old 8865, I have that kit. It stayed put together for years until I got tired of lugging it around. The tires on it were PERFECT for making monster trucks.

I have 8880! Used to have 8865 - well, still have the childhood lego collection in a tub.

Neat.. although of all the Lego kits I had as a kid, I don't think I ever once built what the kit was intended for...

Not my picture, but that's the Lego supercar I have. The original Lego F1 car. Took me two days to put it together, in between school. Yea, I was in high school when I built it. And I fully admit it. I'm a dork, it's a fact haha.

Multi-link suspension with inboard dampers, rack and pinion steering with 3/4 of a turn lock-to-lock, V10 engine (just like the real thing) with differential, and a pneumatic lifting engine cover.

Wow, nice F1 car! I don't remember that set. Same wheels as my new car...(flipped the other way)

Slefain, I had an old tractor kit that used the same tires as the 8865. The other instructions were kinda like a monster truck.... I loved that alternate build.

I tossed the new one together, was like 5-6 hours...The specialized parts are pretty cool. The crank is more realistic, cylindrical pistons, connecting rods....the shifting mechanism is syncronized. I was amazed.

I also saw they have a Unimog too. That might be a Christmas present :) http://jalopnik.com/5807593/the-largest-lego-technic-ever-is-a-unimog

I had two Tecnic sets. The go-cart and the Unimog. At the time, however, they were called "Expert Builder" instead of Tecnic. this was circa '82

we hooked that 4.5 volt dc motor up to an HO guage train controller (approx 18 vdc max). It had enough punch to snap the plastic gears if you had too much reduction. That little motor never did give up even with 18 volts on it. Not made in China

I credit the Tecnic sets for giving me the aptitude to ace the test (whatever it's called) the military gives to determine your specialty. I still didn't join though

I really want one of these kits. Do they still make them or is this a "I hope one pops up on ebay" kinda deal?

Edit: just googled... I got so excited about wanting one of these, I forgot to search.

I had one of these as a kid. No special parts, just off-the-shelf Technics bits. But it had a working transmission, adjustable seats, moving pistons, suspension, etc. I made it into a kick-ass dune buggy later, I wish I had more pictures.
