So, the GRM Rally Saab is for sale and I'm toying with the concept of some partial trades towards the $9999 price.

Here are some cars I'm looking at:

GC Subaru Impreza (4 door or wagon)
Volkswagen 1.8T Jetta/5-door Golf
Mercedes/BMW wagon
Ford Focus ZX5

Notice the trend towards 4-door/wagons.

Let me know what you have and we might be able to strike a deal!

VW 1.8T. And you thought the Saab needed a lot of work, lol. If you get a Focus stock up on window regulators. I had to replace one on my neighbor's ZX5. They are made from craptanium. The angle of the rear hatch on the Impreza wagon chewed up a lot of space so we went with a Forester. You can lower them with WRX parts, you know.

I think everyone knows I have a kid now...that makes the 4 door or wagon thing pretty important.

As far as keeping cars...see my next column for more on that. It's a disease. The LeGrand is a bit different though and that'll probably go to my dad for safekeeping. Everything else? Not so much.

Keep me in the loop on any neons you acuire. Maybe I need rehab, or a more fun, yet economical car.

Audi A4 Quattro would also be on that list. As for Neons, I think my brother has already called dibs on the ACR when its done later this year. I don't think he's had enough problems with his VWs and wants some more.

My WRX isn't really for sale, but I'm ready for something else. Not a Rally Saab though. If you have any interest in a high mileage, bone stock bugeye, let me know if there's any other trade fodder I'd be interested in.

I loved my 2000 Audi S4. How about an Avant version?

Nogaro blue wagon

Laser red wagon

Hmm...I don't suppose a beat up 2-time LeMons competitor turned rallycross whore that lives on the opposite corner of the country would get me much of a discount, huh? It doesn't mind getting ridden hard and put away wet, plus it's LeMons race ready!

I am still waiting for GRM to do a Hyundai...... that's what you need.

Bah, you had a four door / wagon before the kid, no need to make silly excuses. I don't have any kids and I've got FOUR wagons. They're just so damn practical! One will be sold soon (I have a pair of '67 Amazon wagons) but they all have their purposes...the Saabaru is her daily driver and a good road trip car, the 122S is the fun day trip/utility wagon, and the Impreza is our race beater. Wagons and hatchbacks in general are so practical, it's hard to imagine going back to not having at least one around. I can, and have, lived without them for long periods before...but it made for some interesting compromises.

I'd love to see an article (or series) on a GC wagon family hauler. Thick with aftermarket support, easy to swap engines about, cheap to buy, very reliable, and still small enough to be sporty. Of course, I'm already sold on the idea, so I guess I wouldn't benefit much from the article other than saying COOL when it publishes.

I prefer to think that it is a highly valued inherited personality trait.

I sat down the other day and went through a list of all the cars my Dad had while I was growing up. I got stomach cramps....couple of 67 Barracudas, 69 Road Runner, Opel Manta Rally, '72 TR6, very early 240z, '76 280z, XKE, big block Vette sold 2 days before I got my license, 944 Turbo, Saab 99 Turbo, 300 ZX TT, Corky Bell Turbo'd Miata, and the list goes on. It's cool to relate the time in your life to what car you were driving.

Any consideration towards turbo volvo wagons? I'd love to see a grm project of one of those. I've never owned a volvo but I do want one and would really like to see what you guys could do with one and how much fun they can be while still being practical.

Hmm... almost tempted to suggest my '03 TDI wagon... unfortunately, not quite ready to set it... yet... plus, I'm not sure how well a rally-preped 900 would do as a daily driver...

We did, but it would be helpful if my next street-driven project car has some family capability.

Per,

The Saab is about $2500 to high. If you knock the price, it will sell. If you knock it to $4000, I'll buy

I believe it's priced very fairly for the work and safety equipment involved. The May issue has the project wrap and announcement of the sale.

Jerry: yea, it's not really any slower than a normal MINI. The extra length is noticeable, but not necessarily in a bad way, it just means you have to retime your slaloming. Kim kept running over cones w/ the back tire. She would have been 2nd on index otherwise.

Of course you do or you wouldn't have picked that price

Time will tell, but it's an older platform and there are a ton of cars available right now (that don't seem to selling either). Your Suby a few years back sold quick, I think it was priced better.

Good Luck!
