I'm beginning to understand they're not that common. If you can find anything on these I'd love to hear from you.

Cool find! Bet you could outrun it on foot, though. An uncle had a diesel Rabbit, I would find myself 'urging it on'.
I remember my Caddy, it was a diesel converted to gas. One of the VWs that perpetuated my hate for them but it sure did look cool.
Sweet! I'd rock it the way it is.
I'm really interested to know if that's a legit factory job.

Dan it seems it may be Canadian Military. the lift is from the Golf Country edition. I'll know more later.
I kinda doubt that, unfortunately. The Golf Country was an A2 if I remember correctly. They have a subframe in the front, which the A1 doesn't. In any case, US production of the pickup ended in 83. The A2 arrived in 85 (84 in europe.) If that was how it worked, that would be great. You could just lower the subframe.
I'm still very curious about the lift. The control arms attach directly to the unibody on an A1, and the axles can only droop so far before they hit the front mount.
Only Golf Countries I've ever seen were A2s so I think you're right.
