I used this for the headliner of a Jetta I had.

This is hilarious, because when the topic of headliners came up with my aforementioned friend, I went through all the design iterations this thread has already seen.

ridiculous branded stuff, insane paisley, camo, even seersucker was suggested

Great minds think alike...

Most older cars had metal staves that supported fabric headliners with pockets sewn into them for the staves. You gotta be kinda good at sewing. I did one for my '60 Elky. But then again, I look pretty good in a apron and heels. Are you saying you have an older car of similar construcion, or a molded panel one that is just missing? If you are missing a molded one, you can probably get one for nearly free from a junkyard.

Well the car in question is a 1961 lincoln continental. I got some metal headliner ribs that go across the roof in a pile somewhere. but the inside roof of the car is covered in surface rust, as well as the c pillar. so i guess i have to buy/make an interior for it

but i dont really know what i need to do. any suggestions/advice

The rust won't matter much. Hit it with a little converter.

I am not a good enough seamstress to tell you how to make a rib supported fabric headliner without the original to use as a pattern. I used the original, carefully cut it up, and used it as a pattern for the new one.

Talk to someone who knows how to make dresses from scratch, like on a dress form. Seriously. Perhaps your wife or a friend of your wife would help. It will involve a lot of measuring, and trial and error.
