I wonder who helped them write that. The whole part about oversteering and slip angles didn't come from some city councilor.

So by that definition couldn't any autocross where anyone accidentally slid the car be shut down?

It is a near verbatim quote of the definition in wikipedia:

Drifting refers to a driving technique and to a motorsport where the driver intentionally oversteers, causing loss of traction in the rear wheels, while maintaining control from entry to exit of a corner. A car is drifting when the rear slip angle is greater than the front slip angle, to such an extent that the front wheels are pointing in the opposite direction to the turn (e.g. car is turning left, wheels are pointed right or vice versa).

Yes, and that's why the dingbats who used wiki to draft a bill made one with unintended concequences; they wanted to pick on drifters. They ended up picking on ALL motorsports. (OK, maybe not TSD rallies)

Sounds to me like some of the folks living near Turner field raised Hell with their city council people and got this pushed through.

Have there been any run-ins with locals at the drift events? Have the drifters been hanging around after the event is over and "practicing"? Does this parking lot attract drifters after hours (the in-car kind) that "practice" into the night?

Seems like if you want to fix a problem you need to find it's source.

I've read annecdotal witness accounts (from reputable people) who reported such activities. One such incident featured a drifter continuing his fun on an adjoining surface street and causing an accident.

Autocrossing at the site pre-dates the building of Turner Field (anyone remember the A-FC stadium lot?) and while there have been a few isolated incidents, they are few and far between; the perps get a stern scolding or are banned. Not so much with drift participants and its' spectators.

Hence the legislation..............

That doesn't mean other "racing" activities at Turner aren't at some risk, but precedent also indicates they are far less intrusive than the drift events.

Yes - the drifters have generally been a loud, obnoxious nuisance to the neighborhood. In addition to the engines and tires, there's loud music, jackassery on the street etc. While it's a pretty stark contrast from autocrosses, I do fear that autocross will be swept under the same rug. But I'm not signing. The sooner drifting is gone from Turner, the sooner autocross will be less under the microscope.

every driver's meeting at bmwcca autox includes VERY stern warnings about driving too fast or aggressively around town as the incredible airfield we use is constantly under attack to shut down motorsports there.

i make it a point to fuel up in town, get lunch, and stop at local watering holes on the way out to make sure at least some people/businesses are benefitting from our existence. i get the feeling the average amateur drift crowd doesnt feel quite the same responsibility for their actions, though i hope i'm wrong?

Yeah, unfortunately I figured as much. I'd love to see the responsible drifters have a stable place to play. Until they tighten the rules for baffoonery though, this scenario will happen over and over again.

I can't blame the residents for wanting to enjoy their weekends.......they do live there after all.

Either behave, or find a place far, far away from any residences. Seems fair to me.

Then bust them for the on-road jackassery and the loud music rather then the on coarse things...

Maybe if people would start trying to treat dorifto as an actual motorsport instead of this idiotic car based lifestyle E36 M3 it wouldn't get such a bad rap.

In reply to 93EXCivic:

The on-course tire/engine noise AND the noxious tire smoke are integral to the complaints.

If the drift crowd were anywhere near as considerate as other clubs and entities that use the site for automotive events, there probably wouldn't be an issue.

Emphasis on "probably".

The only way to ensure that such antics do not continue to be a recurring problem, without wasting an officers entire day sitting there and babysitting a bunch of overgrown chidlren at each and every event, is to either have responsibility lie with the sanctioning group to sufficiently police themselves...Or get rid of it all together. If the organizers lack the maturity or testicular fortitude to do the former, then the community will inevitably push for the latter. Irresponsibility off the track does just as much, if not more, to harm the public acceptance of motorsports than any of the actual racing.
