I'm reading with my popcorn, then SF1 jumps in and ruins it all.

No one mentioned sticking an f2t in it. Do that and I bet he's on board.

I'm not saying I don't see the appeal of this derelict hulk. But just that I don't view derelict hulks as something worth money.

I drive some dumb E36 M3. I've bought some dumb E36 M3. This... at $7500 is something i'd run away screaming from.

$3000-$3500? Maybe.

Leaves budget for F2T.

Yeah, at that point can't you just get a turn key driver grade 80s 911 for a few thousand more?

Priced have been skyrocketing on 911s, but yes... seems to be doable under $20k.

Bring $6,000 in cash and your trailer and that car could be taking home, easily.

Considering the condition of a 912 Porsche usually being traded in this part of the country for that amount, this one is a REAL bargain. Check the pics of the inner rockers and pan !! Dust and dirt rather than rust and rot.

A bargain all day long. Prime it black and drive the wheels off of it. A reliable, honest, Porsche for Toyota money. You MAY find a good 914 for around that price, but NEVER a 912, never in New England.

$7500 can probably buy a 944S2. I'll take that.

944s don't have that nice upright driving position or the pedals hinged at the correct end.

I'd bet $7500 could buy you a rusty free 944, a pair of Sparco Springs, and some Wilwood floor-mounted pedals.

I’d be willing to give up the power and smoothness of the six in exchange for the lightness and reduced operational cost of the four but there’s no escaping the old mantra of “the only thing more expensive than a cheap Porsche is a cheap Lotus.”

I suspect this one will need to wait for someone that likes the mods as restoring it would likely cost more than just buying one that hadn’t been “improved”.

This is true, drivers are closing in on 20k and they seem to sell right now for that money.

the most expensive part is not there.. the Flat 6. The 912E uses the 2.0 Type 4 from the 914

I know and since the type 4 isn’t that different to the VW (better crank and ???), you could have several VW engines (stock, moderately spicy, and mucho caliente) lined up in your garage ready to suit whatever kind of driving you’re going to do.

My point was that it’s going to be too much of an undertaking to get the car back to original for it to be attractive at almost any price so it’ll probably have to wait for someone that want’s it as is.

BTW, I took one for a test drive along with another GRM board member many years ago and I'm kicking myself for not buying it. Clean California car, no rust, everything was there - if memory serves, the dealer wanted $3,500. Ouch, ouch, ouch.

All 944s are rust free unless they have had bad body work done in the past.

But there is no way you could physically get the driving position of a 911 in a 944 unless you're maybe 5'3. And even then, you still don't get the hypnotically good steering that older 911s have.
