How to get in on the action without the commitment of building a car? How about volunteering?

From Rupert Berrington, GRM’s longtime photographer:

As most of you know, I have taken over as chairman of Rally Colorado since the beginning of last year. We are now just over two months away from the Rally and this is my third call …

Hopefully a few GRMers can help out. If not for the distance, would totally be there.

Same here. Might be time to start volunteering more frequently at events in my area.

Rupert can still use a few more helpers, so just bumping this up.

Front row rally seats, anyone? Plus you get to hang with Rupert.

Current status is we have 67 signed up.  We need 13 more to get to our absolute minimum and about 33 more to have a nice cushion.  Here is why we need to have people to sign up now.

1. We need to know the exact number of volunteers now as we plan for all the stages we are running now. If we think we are significantly short we will have to cut the number of stages we run. Right now we are 25 short of the absolute minimum we need to run all the stages we have planned. I have spoken to at least 15 people who are coming who have not signed up yet. That means there must be many more out there. It is the same as if you are not coming. We base our plans on who has actually signed up.

2. We need to order the FREE t shirts that you are getting by next week. If you are not signed up you will not get a t-shirt. That also goes for all the goodie bags. We can’t wait to the last day to order them. In general we need about 4 weeks.

3. We have FREE rooms reserved for volunteers. If they are not registered three weeks out they release the rooms and anyone can reserve them.

4. We need to know the numbers several weeks out to order the correct number of FREE sandwiches you receive on Saturday and Sunday as well as the amount of barbecue we need for the Saturday night party.

5. We are trying to bring Rally Colorado back up to National level and perhaps even International level. If we are dropping volunteers that makes it much harder, We have added National and International interest. We even have the possibility of some well known National teams expected to compete here this year. If we have to cut stages our chances drop drasticly.

So if you are 90% sure you can come please register now!

We have noticed some problems that you may have not noticed. One is we have changed the Rally Data web site. If you go to the old one it is not there any more. You must go here: https://www.rallydata2.com/

Also make sure you add RallyData2 to your contact list as we have noticed many people not seeing messages that end up in their junk folder. This is one reason why I am contacting you directly.

Thank you for your time! Motor racing does not happen with out you, with out volunteers. We are grateful for everyone that helps!

2023 Rally Colorado is July 22 and July 23 this year in Rangely, Colorado near the Utah and Wyoming borders.  Just south of Dinosaur National Monument.

In reply to MyMiatas :

Pretty much everything.  We are still looking for one more sweep.  You follow a couple more sweep vehicles and help pull out cars that have crashed or broken down.  We need more people at the start and finish of each stage including waving the green flag and working control as the cars check in.  We need volunteers on course to make sure non racers don't get on course and record that the real racers have come by.  Ham operators who radio in information to race control in town.  Great scenery.  The drivers say this is the best course in the USA and ARA officials say we have the most supportive local population including full support on a parade through town.  Sign up if you can make it.  Free place to stay, free t-shirt, free lunch both days and free dinner Saturday night.

Update.  We have had 18 more people sign up in the past two days.  We have about 11 people who say they will be signing up this weekend and about 10 more who are looking into it.  Still could use 10 more to have a nice cushion for last minute cancellations because of illness, family emergency or car problems.  Thanks for all your help.  Motor racing does not happen with out volunteers!

You'll need to log in to post.
