I've got a '79 280ZX LeMons car that we're building up. Just browsing around, I found a guy not too far away with a rust free '83 shell for $250 that we'd use if we wad up the current chassis. Unfortunately, I don't have room to store it in the driveway, so it'll likely live outside behind the garage or the shed on the grass. The ground is very moist. How can I keep it from turning to the usual Datsun pile o rust while storing it outside?
How much does the shrink wrap cost? Any other ideas?
Step 1: Do NOT park it on grass. Do everything you can to not park it on grass.
Step one: park it on a concrete pad. Parking on grass is one of the worst things you can do.
Step two: build a heated garage around it.
Seriously, I'd look into at least a gravel pad. Paved is better. After that I'd buy an instant garage/tent to store it in. Much better than a cover and you can also store parts or even do work in there if needed. Something like this should fit the bill nicely. Depending on the cost of stone you could have a nice little work and storage space for under $500.
BAG it. Yup get a super large zip lock bag toss in some desicant packs and seal it up. Tos a tarp over the bag to keep the UV rays from killing the bag.
Look in hemmings theres always an ad for them. I recall someone here used one too.

Done.
Out here works, too. And it's not quite as hot as AZ .
Definitely keep it away from moist soil or grass if you are planning to use the bottom 5 inches of the shell.
If you can re-grow the grass after the car's done - put down a sheet of 6 mil polyethylene, bigger than the car, dump a couple inches of gravel on that, put the car as high above that as you can. 2 cinder blocks high is good - to promote ventilation. If it's going to sit a long time, spray the bottom foot or two w/ used motor oil.
Try to do this where you'd build a nice shed once the car's off the gravel pad so you can re-purpose it.
hang it from the ceiling of your garage w/ a pulley and winch system
do what the car manufacturers do for transoceanic shipping... coat in cosmoline wax. Googled that for ya. You probably still need to keep the shell covered/stored.

QFT The inland north west seems to preserve cars well too. Every time I go to Spokane I see lots of well preserved old tin.
