Howdy all. Joined a little while ago (for a for sale thread.. it didn't pan out.) I have been a lurker for awhile, and have decided to actually say hi.

so, hi.

A little background on me:

The longest any verhicle I have ever owned remained stock, was 6 days. And I always end up buying the lesser vehicles... 1989 grand prix (with the 2,8) 1984 Renault LeCar (never did get that thing street legal), 1989 pontiac 6000, 1991 Lincoln Continental (with working factory air-ride, but under my own controls.. cause I am cool like that), 2001 Pt cruiser, 1986 Mustang GT convertible (with a hardtop door, and quarter panel... just sawzalled the tops of them off), 1993 plymouth laser, 2001 eclipse spyder...4cyl, auto (the worst case scenario).

interestingly, the laser (a 1.8L 5speed) actually became our chumpcar, after hitting 275,000 miles, being parted out twice, living in 2 countries, and being theoretically totaled once (hit a cow at 55 mph, and they said they could total it for slightly over 2 grand, or give me slightly under 2 grand and a keep it.. so I kept it, since by the time they made their decision, I had already put it back on the road.... it wasn't pretty, but it was legal, and safe again). Interestingly, I drove it 275,000 miles without cracking the engine open, nor did I replace the CLUTCH. she just kept going.... but we have yet to make it live through a 24 hours race (it survived an 8 hour race, but we had to take a break in the middle to let the clutch cool off...) the last race (25 hours at ohio, I melted all 4 pistons, the head, and some block....after 2 hours. So this year we are rebuilding, and bringing a spare engine/tranny combo. one thing I do not recommend: do not take the front brakes and put them on the rear, and then put 3000gt brakes on the front. yes, it gives you crazy braking, but we can't keep the rear planted.. it just gets all squirrely, and we have 2 proportioning valves, and still have too much brake in the rear...

My DD is the 2001 eclipse spyder...header, hiflow cat, magnaflow catback, injen CAI, D2 coilovers, ST rear sway bar, Megan lower strut bars, 2000 Gt breaks in all 4 corners, miscolored fender (with corvette grand sport stripes made of painters tape).. you know a rice mobile, but she can carve a corner at autocross.... if only she had some get up and go to go with the turnin' and stopin'.

anyway, that is a little about me. howdy.

I realized that as I was reading some of the threads.... People deliberately buy cars like our chumpcar around here. DELIBERATELY.

So explain to me this "your controls" air ride on this lincoln. Sounds like a hack that could amuse me greatly.

essentially the air ride on the 1991 lincoln is controlled by little tiny levers, that run potentiometers (volume knobs) (or that is what it looked like, I wasn't sure if they were rotary encoders, or simply potentiometers.. and that is why I got extras of the OEM parts, more on that later). it has one on each front wheel, and one on the rear axle.

The first thing I did was take them, and adjust them (bend them) to read "wrong" thus lowering the car to a nice lowrider stance... but I wanted more. so I found an extra set in a junk yard (didn't want to mess up the OEM parts, in case I wanted to go back) and ran the wires to the new ones... under the dash.

With that i could put the car anywhere I wanted.. it just went down fast, up took like a minute. It was pretty sweet, being able to roll up to a parking sport, and dump the bags so it sat on the ground (almost) whenever I wanted. I would just take awhile to get back up when I started it back up..

It was not high tech, or even precise in any way, But I was rolling in a 1000 dollar car, with air ride, that I could drop at a second's notice... not bad for an extra 15 bucks.

this was back, 12 years ago, and now, i think I could have done it better... I miss that car.

FYI: if you try drive the car with bags fully deflated, it bounces REALLY badly, and I think anything above 25mph could easily make you lose control and wreck... but just a couple PSI, and she cruises REALLY nice and low.

TL;DR: I put the automatic controls for the air ride under the dash.
