So I spent my NYD catching up on some past due maintenance on the two dailies. The wife's Rio has needed a new timing belt/belts and oil change for way too long. My car just needed an oil change. So I did the oil change on the Forte. Including jacking it up, finding the tools/drain pan, putting the stands under and changin the oil takes 10 minutes.... and you never have to move the drain pan for the oil drain and filter. Such fantastic engineering for long term maintenance.

Move on to the Rio. Since Ben (SFO) and I had done one recently I knew they were easier than the old Hyundai belts. But man... this one was even easier. Crank pulley even slid right off. Total time to do the timing belt and accessory belts? 1 hour and 10 minutes. Then I spent an hour + cleaning up the engine bay. I wish I'd taken before/after pics because it is night and day difference.

More importantly, unlike the truck, I used a 10mm, 12mm, 21mm for the lugnuts and a 22mm for the crank pulley. 4 sockets. total. God I love these things.

What's a timing belt and why did you have to replace it? Sounds like a hassle.

Yep, that timing belt job was one of the easier jobs i've done this site of an F2T.

I'll gladly spend $40 and an hour every 5 years over spending hundreds for timing chain crap that stretches.

I still won't be impressed until you can do the entire job in 10 minutes like i can do an F2T, but that's still pretty good for something you only have to do every half decade or so.

On my Mazda2 you don't even need to jack up the car to change the oil. Simple cars for the win!

Yeah, but this is a modern car with actual convienences like A/C and power steering. And the waterpump is driven by the alt belt instead of the timing belt. so all that E36 M3 has to come off first.

I'm sorry. It's the only thing I can think of to say for you (and any other TDI owner).... and I truly mean it. When they're good, they're good. When they're not, the gates of hell hath opened and swallowed you down.

agreed bob, I was a complete timing belt noob when I did mine on the accent and it took me 3 hours because I was triple checking everything I was doing. I could easily tackle the job again in an hour and a half. well maybe a little longer this next time because ill be replacing the waterpump too, that'll be a first for me.

Not looking forward to the afternoon and pain in the ass that is my accord's timing belt. I have a feeling itll take me a couple afternoons and a case of beer.

Yeah, mine has been good, but when done correctly, even the TDI-guru's typically do a TB change in about 6 hrs. Because I usually have a second car to drive and hate rushing, it takes me days.

I hate reading threads that have TB change horror stories. I've never done any form of timing belt or chain maintenance.

Elantra-Touring oil change is a 10-15 minute job as well, can even do it by driving the car up on a couple of 2x4s, just to get a few extra inches of clearance...tough I prefer to use a jack on the driver side. 10mm takes off the plastic tray that is under the filter, which itself comes off easily by hand. 17mm does the drain plug. Soon as a thermometer with double-digits and a day off meet, it'll get done again.

Typically, the "horror part" involves actually getting to the TB. What makes the TDi a PITA is the engine mount bolts to the block in the middle of the TB routing, so you have to hang the engine (or support it from below). Made all the more fun by there being less than 1" of clearance between the engine mount bracket in question and the unibody.

Other than that, it's basically a "follow the directions" project with a few special tools for locking the cam shaft and injection pump, then checking the injection timing using a laptop. Gas engines are apparently much easier (I've never done one - only my TDi three times).

Speaking of hyundai timing belts, i was also pleasantly surprised by how easy the 2.7 V6 one is.

Right now i came inside to, ostensibly, look up some stuff on the miata timing belt / water pump / motor mounts im supposed to be doing right now.

What's funny is the 2.7 is a BITCH compared to the 4 bangers.... not as bad as the 3.5's though. THose things were like 10lbs of E36 M3 stuffed into a 3lb bag.

My '95 Maxima had it's original timing chain (209k miles), and only required turning the wheels to the right in order to do a quick 10 minute oil change. Kicking myself for selling that thing...
