Hypothetical question, based on unrealistic scenarios, also good fun...

If you were given a choice of one car to have for all of your activities (drive to work, pick up the kids, go to the grocery store, share with the spouse, autocross, track days, etc). What car would it be? Let's assume there is no budget, but you have to give up all other motorized transportation (non-mass transit).

The best I can come up with would be the (E90) BMW M3 Sedan with SMG.

  • 4 Doors for the wife and (soon to be) kid

  • Truck space to haul the groceries and kid supplies

  • SMG so that the wife can drive it

  • V8 + RWD for the times that you could enjoy it

  • Comfortable enough to sit in and enjoy every day

Any other thoughts?

Honda Minvan.

Minivans cover all bases except your ego.

Who says that girls can't drive a stick shift? My wife drives a Civic Si, and my mom learned on my parents' GTO. You know, now that I think about it, my parents had that GTO as their only car for several years. Maybe that's the answer: '67 GTO, four-speed, Posi, dog dish hubcaps.

599 GTO. I'd learn to drive it in snow. There's enough room for road trips. And if I need to go grocery shopping and there's not enough room for 12 cases of beer? Its a Ferrari! I'll make 2 trips.

I would drive it daily.

I like the Magnum idea, sort of, but having owned both a Magnum and many minivans, im still going with the minivans!

As of right now id pick a brand new v6 Sienna or an Odyssey. I havent been around the new Sienna in person but i think id lean that way over the Odyssey.

Minivans DO cover all your bases, and the ego affliction is something i seem to be immune to.. Im more proud to be 'in the know' about minivans than i am upset that other people think incorrect things about them!

I think I already had it. The E36 M3 sedan was just about perfect although waving your 4 door requirement I could say the same about my 964 C2 with a roof rack.

It'd be hard, I'm with Osterkraut on this one.

I'd probably end up going with something like a WRX wagon. Decent fuel conomy, decent power, decent interior space (though not great any of the above) and AWD. Decent aftermarket, and if I really wanted to, I could convert it to RWD and not have it be a totally wonky configuration.

I'd enjoy it for six months, be okay with it for another 6-12, and then be bored to tears after that.

I will say though, if I'm limited to only one car, I get to have multiple wives, right?

Yeah... because once you have only one car you need to fill the void with a bunch of other things that frustrate you, infuriate you and cost a fortune.

My wife refuses to learn because she "doesn't like the noise it makes" when she doesn't do it right. Also, because she didn't want to pay to replace the clutch on a Porsche.

My wife can drive stick, too. Two of our six (Volvo 850 and Roadmaster) are autos (Miata, Swift, 745, GTO all manual).

I have tried this. I can't do it. I get bored. I don't like being on the track knowing that if I make a mistake I can't get to work the next Monday.

Plus I have a four car garage and if I didn't have cars to fill it with (I have 5 inside - the Miata and Swift share a slot) who the hell knows what kind of shenanigans I would be up to.

I did ok with my E46 M3 solo for a couple of months, but I couldn't go much past that, even with that car. And I loved it dearly, but... no.

If I could only own one car, I would introduce myself to the person in charge and initiate regime change.
