Oh I agree.

I kept comparing a AW11 and W30 MR2. The W30 is lighter than a AW11 and has 140hp where the AW11 (stock) has like 112. That is definitely a "win" combination there.

I am laughing my ass off at the idea of people blaming their misshifts on the transmission like it's a 'transmission problem'. There's nothing wrong with that transmission.

It is NORMAL, not goofy, for a manual trans to allow you to break your engine. I personally dont know of any manual trans that will outright stop you from selecting the wrong gear.

Hell, i've misshifted one of my cars after driving it 20k miles and never missing one. E36 M3 just happens sometimes. It would be hilarious if i blamed it on the car.

I also don't care much about comments on the cam switchover since that's changeable. If you can get away with lowering the switch, do that. If the car doesnt like it, raise the rev limiter. Judging by this dyno sheet there's at least 2k more rpm worth of possibilities:

One point of reference on how 'slow' these cars are out of lift is, i helped a friend race his 2zz XRS against his stock Supercharged Regal. Starting from a roll in 2nd gear, the XRS was just as quick out of lift as the supercharged 3.8. After it hit lift it would pull away. Those cars trap within a mph of each other on the dragstrip (verified) but in the real world the 2zz car is faster.

^This. My last track day I had no problem shifting, my buddy continued to botch getting the car into 3rd.

I never noticed a shifting problem either. I'm not hard on transmissions though. You don't have to abuse them to be fast.

Funny that you say E36 M3 happens, I know a handful of BMW guys that have lost motors to the "money shift." Was riding in my buddy's E36 at Road America when he missed fifth for third and the string of expletives came pouring forth...

I agree that being tricky is not a design flaw. Human error is human error.

" Unfortunatly I miss shifted it from 5th to 4th instead of 6th on the banking in Daytona. Needless to say it exploded violently and I heard the expensive sound of silence at 150ish..."

I never said the transmission caused the miss shift, in fact I specifically said "I miss shifted". I did say "I didn't care for the shifter" which is an entirely different from blaming it for my poor shift.

In retrospect I have been doing track days since 2003 and I campaigned three different IT cars for the five years before I had my kids. The only one I missed a shift in is the Celica... just saying.

I find the shifter in my 281K mile B13 track rat far easier to acurately shift then the one in the GTS.

Well you never said there was a 'transmission problem' so i was not trying to direct my comments at you.

I think that's a known problem with the e36 known as "5th gear lean" and it does make the shift action very vague and sloppy. Like 1 inch of free lateral play on each side.

I'm pretty sure it's the shifter action/clutch that keeps the gts from being a widely loved car.

I've driven a few of them, and honestly enjoy the shifter/clutch action just as much if not more so than i do a Miata, which seems to be most peoples' benchmark.

I can definitely say they are NOT helped by a short shifter. Buddy had a GT-S with some kind of short one on and it was just awful.

Remember to make sure lift engages and lift bolts were changed to an updated version. Lift bolts were prone to breaking pre 02 and are a PITA to remove if they're broken. And if you're lift bolts are broken you get no lift(vtec)

Well I actually drove one of these on my lunch break. Went to seedy used car lot on the wrong side of town. They had a 2000 with 150k advertised for 4.9k. I thought what the hey, even if it's terrible, I can still test drive it.

The car was terrible. Beat to death, dents, dings, chips, rusty missing paint spots. You name it. Interior was a mess and the car had a Momo shift knob with a"short shifter". The momo knob was loose, and even a driver seat bolt was broken and missing. I must say that the short shifter was the sloppiest mess of a shifter that made the car a beast to shift. I know that one with an OEM setup would be just fine. Either way the shifting didn't bother me too much but will take some time getting used to. The getup and go factor was way more than I expected. Even for one with some age on it. I really couldn't tell if the car was seeing lift or not. I assume if the butt dyno didn't feel it, then it probably isn't lifting. The trans also had a grind going into 3rd and 4th. All and all it was the perfect example of what NOT to buy.

It does however make up my mind that this is the car I want. The interior reminds me of my old 2g DSM, which I love, and the driver position is to my liking. The fun factor will def. be there. Now I just have to keep looking and be patient.

Oh you'll KNOW if lift is engaging. It's loud, and the sudden kick in the pants is not subtle. Feels more like a small shot of nitrous.

That's funny, i bet you didnt even get to the good part.

First, most important question: Did you take it over 6000 rpm? Because if you didn't, it wasn't in lift.

transmissions on these cars and the W30 MR2 are good, never had a problem when I drove either car for the first time even.

Reminds me a lot of honda vtec in cars like the Type R Integra or S2000. I would like a W30 MR2 with this 2zz. Mini MR S2000.
