OK, we've figured out why you have to remove the trans.
That's on the floor now and hopefully the engine will be next on Saturday. Pretty sure all that's left now are the motor mounts and any electrical connection we missed.
Bump for any updates on this procedure, as it's possibly on the list for the NC I picked up.
