Monday I bought this 1996 Chevrolet Suburban LT 4x4 for the princely sum of $900.00 at the local carmax auction. It runs well and shifts smoothly. The interior is in good shape and it has a decent set of Michelin tires on it.
I got it home and began to detail it. The inside cleaned up pretty good but the paint is kind of edgy. The hood is faded and has clear coat peeling off as does the doors and the trim line down the side. There is no room in the budget for a repaint so I had to come up with a workable solution. I have wanted to try the duplicolor colored plasti dip advertised at the local advanced auto parts for awhile and figured this was a good candidate. I know it isn't the best option but I think it will work for this scenario.
Other then the paint it needs to have the a/c charged and one of the mufflers replaced. Also the inside door handle is broken and the passenger seat has a tear.
Budget so far $900.00 + $110.00 auction fee = $1010.00
Six cans of duplicolor red plasti dip 6 x $6.99 = $41.95
One interior door handle from Advance $15.99
Total budget thus far $1067.93

Gross!
A little elbow grease and some purple power...
Nice buy. Do you need a dealer's license to attend the Carmax auction?
Yea, wondering about that myself.

Yes, each carmax has an auction every week. A lot of times you can get deal on the cheaper cars there. I actually bought two other cars at the same sale. I got a nice 2003 mustang GT 5-speed and a 1986 Volvo 240.
Just want to add that if you put suburbayukonhoe into Google this is the only result. Carry on.
Is the 240 a wagon buy chance? I'm looking for a rust free donor for my v8 wagon.
So, what do you hope to get for that beast and are you interested in trades?

Trades are always welcome. I guess it all depends where I end up budget wise after I fix the A/C and the exhaust. I will probably ask $2900 to $2500ish. I can make a better deal for a GRMer PM me if you are interested.
Freaking steal. Bring that thing up to the land of salt and rust and you'll easily get $5k for it, I'd wager. Is it a 2500?

Counting the lugs, I don't think it is. A 2500 should be 8 lug, IIRC.

Nice title! I had a similar one a couple weeks ago: https://grassrootsmotorsports.com/forum/grm/would-you-high-milage-2000-yukonburbanhoe/103420/page1/
Was written as suburba-yukon-hoe
I think it would roll off the tongue better as suburba-yuk-ahoe or maybe reduced to sub-yuk-ahoe. Maybe even Sub-Yuk-ah-lade.

Hmm. How many miles are on it/ where are you located? If it drives good, shifts good, (and I'm dreaming here...) the air works, and you're somewhere in the South - I might be interested. Need to upgrade my 98 Ranger that needs a few little things to something that'll fit kids and dog in it for camping, home depot, towing, etc., so maybe some kinda trade + cash on my end?
Nice work on the carpets. Can you briefly describe your elbow grease technique?

I use a 50 / 50 mix of purple power and a medium bristle scrub brush. Soak it pretty good in purple power and scrub. Then I rub it vigorously with a terry cloth towel. Repeat till clean. It looked like it was soda which actually cleans up pretty easily.

I am in Jacksonville Florida. It has 230K on it. PM me if you have any questions. I should get some more pictures tomorrow after I finish painting the passenger side. Then it is off to the muffler shop to have the exhaust and A/C repaired.

You are correct it is a 1500. I think the tires are a little larger then stock and it may have a leveling kit which makes it sit a little higher like a 2500.
It came out OK. Is it as good as a repaint definitely not, but given the budget it looks pretty cool and is uniform.
Here is the Volvo... I am pretty excited about this one. It is going on ebay as soon as I get it squared away. It needs the A/C fixed and it has an exhaust leak. (That seems to be a theme lately...)
Will the rattle can paint job polish up with a buffer?
I am curious how a contracting color on the Plasidip like black or something close to the interior would look?
Not as cheap or easy but that truck is a prime candidate for spraying the top part white and becoming two tone.

The rattle can paint is plasti dip. I am pretty sure buffing it would be detrimental
