After my most recent trip to Harbor Freight, I am thinking about building a tool bag specifically for pull-a-part trips. I do not have any particular thing in mind to pull, but if I come across something I want to be prepared.
I was thinking of a sawzall with metal blades, 3/8 ratchet with sockets, 2 different size crescent wrenches, a set of screw drivers, and probably a set of allen wrenches.
What would you put in your tool bag? Keep in mind that space is limited.
It does not matter, you take what you Know you need, and bring everything else for the things you want. I am not sure I ever had everything I needed and I often bring Two box's and a wagon.
- Full set of screwdriver (Phillips and flat)
- Metric and American gear wrenches held together with caribeaners.
- 3/8 metric an American socket sets with 18 breaker bar
- 1/4 drive sockets up to 10mm/7/16
- Prybar
- Lug wrench
- Heavy ballpeen
- Tape measure
- Full torx and allen socket set
- Dykes
- Channel locks
- Utility knife
- 2 crescent wrenches
I have stripped entire cars and pulled engines and rebuilt a suspension with my pullapart bag.
Excellent suggestions. I agree that I don't need to bring all the tools with me, but this will be a set that I will keep in garage on the shelf and I can just grab it (along with any specialty tool I think that I will need) and go. I forgot about the dykes, breaker bar, and torx bits.

I'd carry the breaker bar just for my own security. Last time I visited the north Atlanta PaP by myself some dudes were tailing me through the yard. Same trip some psycho started threatening me for looking at "his cars" in the row. I said to hell with it and chocked the $1 admission up to a learning moment.
Next trip I had a GRMer meet up with me and we hit the south Atlanta lot, much less stressful.
Add nitrile gloves and baby wipes. There is a good chance you will get something nasty on you in a pull a part yard. I find that a set of regular wrenches (metric and saw sets are like $10 each at hf) and a set of Depot well sockets for each with 2 short extensions and a u joint are just as good as a set of ratchet wrenches and a breaker bar replaces the need for a lug wrench.
Most pull-a-part type places don't let you bring in a sawzall or anything like that, at least local to me.
Will be following along though, need to change my current setup. Too heavy and never can find the right socket or wrench.
Don't forget any tools needed for specific vehicles you're after, triple square, giant allens, external Torx, bigass regular torx, etc.
Pry bars. Unless abusing striaght bladed screwdrivers is your thing.

Don't forget what you put your tools & bag in. I've got one of these, and it makes life a lot easier:
